Front end question (of a Tracker or Vitara)
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:58:53 PM »
The front ends on Trackers, Vitaras, Grand Vitaras and XL-7's, are the all identical. Aside from gears obviously, reason why is my brother in law has a 2000 1.6 Tracker 2 dr, and the front end may need replaced, are the housings the same and parts, ie- seals, bearings and cv axles the same. Thanks and I know you will answer.

that tracker will have the aluminum housing like all other 4 cyl 99-03 vitaras trackers (only thing dif is the gears). grand vitara steel housing will bolt right in but youd need the gears out of your old one. XL7 has the same gears as a 1.6 tracker but idk if they bolt directly in but it will work. also some say XL7s have aluminum housing and other says steel, i think it changes with the year.

In addition to the steel and aluminum differences, there are several others - there are two possibly three different styles of aluminum housings, one of which has more "strengthening ribs" running the length of the long arm, later models had the fill hole higher so that they hold more oil, and there are two different styles of third member mount

xl7 diff will work but when i installed mine i needed to mix and match brackets and have a couple holes drilled.  There were already indentations to pilot where the holes needed to go so I had a machine shop drill them nice and straight for me.  That one ended up cracking after a couple years because it was ALUMINUM.  Apparently they began making steel diffs in 2002 but many 2002 xl7s still came with old aluminum diffs. I got a steel GV housing now and ended up getting a rebuild kit from low range and had a mechanic set up the old gears in the new steel housing with new bearings.
