Sammi ranking?
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:37:14 PM »
Where do you think the Samurai ranks as a capable 4x4 all time compared to other 4x4's?  Alot of lists have the zuki in the top 10 but towards the bottom.  I think they may be wrong.  Your guys thoughts.

I think most of the answers here are going to be a little biased. ;D

Yep.

I would put the Samurai up there with the old 40s-60s 4cyl Jeeps as that is basically what it is.

Yep, biased here.

I dont know that its the greatest 4x4 made? Its hard to compare it to all 4x4's as it was designed to fit a certain niche.  Just as weight class is to fighting... you would really have to narrow down the comparison field to similar vehicles as previously stated.

One brother just paid $15+k for a Terex 4 seater. Heres some fun facts: 1650lbs vs 2100lbs sami; wheelbase 86" vs 79.9" sami

My other brother has a 90 something 4cyl Tacoma ext cab with 35's and bone stock.  My sami (with upgrades over stock) can walk circles around it on the trail as far as 4x4 goes.  He can carry cargo and drive on the interstate and I cant!  Guess it just depends on what you want out of your 4x4.

I would place it well above the old jeeps.
Aluminum blocks (lightwight), AC option, good heater, EFI on some models....none were part of the old jeeps.
My bro has an old willys jeep that he wheels occasionally.  Not even close to being the offroad vehicle that my samurai is, IMO.

Like was said though, it all depends on what type of offroading you are going to be doing, as far as where the samurai ranks.  If you need power, speed, and a long wheelbase, the samurai isn't going to be near the top.  But if you are looking at tight, technical, slow speed wheeling, with not too steep of hills, then the samurai is near, or at, the top.

Just curious how your brother fit 35's on his tacoma if its bone stock? I know guys are running 35's with 3" lift and lots of cutting but stock I wouldn't expect it to be very good on the street and useless offroad. Just wondering cause I also run a Tacoma.

Shotgunblast, stock 4x4 or not? Built up I think samurais do very good.

Maybe he ment to say the tacoma had upgrades over stock. And that his bone stock Sami walked circles around it. But I agree no way a stock tacoma will clear 35's the fenders look pretty filled out with 31's

Isn't that one of those Lambo things?

I like my rigs simple and somewhat crude.  In turn, they rarely break down and are easily repaired.

Tell me it wouldn't be fun to take one of those for a spin.  :)  The sad thing is, the couple I've seen are basically static displays that get driven a very careful 50 miles a month to keep the fluids moving.  I can't imagine buying one of those beasts just to look at it.

Take it for a spin?  I would be worried about damaging it and having to pay the repair bill for the rest of my life.   ;)
