Mounting Rock Lights... Any Ideas ????
« on: September 20, 2012, 06:27:18 AM »
Not having wheeled much at night, I did get stuck on Poison Spider / Golden Spike trail for 3 hours one night and had to use a flashlight to find the trail, I need to know where to mount rock lights. I bought some LED's from Horse Power Juice (http://www.horsepowerjuice.com/led-lights/rocklights.html) And wonder if I need to cover the rear of the front tire too? Anyone who runs at night where is the light needed ?

I would think that the idea is to be able to see where you're putting the wheels - in which ever direction you're travelling - what's the possibility you want to be able to back up and position that front tire exactly right?

Let me clarify what I meant, I know I need to light the front of the front tires and the front of the rear tires but what about the rear of the front tires ?

No need for clarification - go back & read my post again - you'll notice I specifically said "in which ever direction you are travelling".

Think about this - in the daytime - have you ever had the need to back up and whilst backing up position the front wheel exactly right?  If your answer to that question is yes, then you need the lights on the rear of the front tires.

We don't rock crawl here, so I can't answer your question based on personal experience, but from a general understanding of what you're up to, I believe you do, and my question was intended to guide you into making a decision, based on your experience.

You want to light up everything underneath your vehicle, similar to an under-lighting kit for lowered rigs.  Make sure you have it above your frame rail so it is protected when you drop your rig over rocks.  Remember, you need to be able to see all around you using only the lights that are coming from your vehicle.

If your rock crawling proper they you should have a spotter with a good flashlight as well.  So I would put a mag-light mount somewhere in your rig as well and put a good flashlight in your tool bag.  That way you always have something available.

I always thought it would be fun to get an LED underbody light kit, so that way under my rig glows blue at night.  Not that I really do night runs anymore...

Ed!  Do what I did and put them in the mirrors, they're called "skitime lights."  The link HERE will take you directly to the post where I have them lit up.

THIS LINK takes you to skitime's original post on these lights.

Quite possibly the best mod I have done.  $22 Wal-Mart lights.  No melted housings or other problems, they have stayed dry and all after 3 years of running them now.  I was just using them the other night driving around in the twisties up near our deer camp and realized how much they light up the sides of the road.

hmm those look cool. I have been checking out some LED lights from oznium and I recently got a set of these to try out off of ebay.. they are cheap at like 6-8 bucks a pair and some of them even have threaded studs.. Cheap cheap and water proof and blah blah blah.. I can tell you they don't light up shit sitting on the work bench... >:D
