Getting hot on the uphill grades!!!!
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:59:55 PM »
1988 Samurai stock with a rebuilt carb. Been a toad all it's life showing about 80K. It's been running fine with the temp showing middle of the gauge. On a trip to Yosemite it did fine the first two days. Up and down long grades between 3200 ft up to 7200 ft. elevations with an OAT of up to 85 degrees. About 650 lbs of weight on board the first day and 500 the last day. On the third day it got hot on a long up hill grade. Cooled it down with water on the radiator and topped off the water. No problems the rest of the way to camp. Later that morning went back out and it overheated on a hill it had gone up three times in the previous day without problem. Same cool it off top it off and back to camp with no problem. Since we got home I have driven it on the freeway in 90 degree + temps and it stayed right in the middle of the gauge. Anyone have any ideas on why it would suddenly start acting up. We had been to Kings Canyon before getting to Yosemite and did some serious hills (from 2500 ft to 7000+) in 85 degrees+ weather with not a hint of heating. I know the engine needs a rebuild as the compression check shows 150 to 160 on all cylinders. It burnt about a quart of oil in 500 miles of mountain driving.

You might need a new clutch for your fan. Did you get any fuel in the middle of all this or was it from the same tank of gas?

I did refuel twice over the period in question. Using premium grade (91). I wondered about the fan. Is there anyway to check it for proper function?
