engine code: evaporation leak?
« on: April 28, 2012, 07:44:07 AM »
my engine light came on about 3 month ago and the code was evaporation leak. i have looked on the hoist for damage or sum-thing unusual but find nothing. i have a 2002 2L motor and 5spd manual tranny with no air condition. it first started wen my exhaust starting leaking. i have fixed the leak and removed the rear catalytic converter as it was 80% blocked (replaced with a pipe since it has 2 of them anyways) then i have reseted the code with the code scanner. each time i reset the code it comes back on after a 10-15 min drive. gas cap,gas tank looks fine, no smell of gas anywhere. exhaust system has no leak at all.

anybody has any suggestion? i also realized that it is under powered t'ill it hits 3200 rpm, not really bad but after the 3200rpm feels like a car with a turbo (gas it and there is a moment of no power/turbo lag) i've got no turbo of course  :P

so far i am driving it since i know its not much at all, but would like to get that light turn off. if it cost too much to fix i'll take the bulb out lol

I frequently get the evap code too since i changed to a Stant locking gas cap.... which by the way does NOT fit well and was extremely poorly constructed (= CHEAP).  It actually bound up on me and I ended up prying it apart with my pocket McGyver pliers to refuel one day this past winter.  That gave me a great sense of security as well (NOT!).  Anyway, all i have for a gas cap now is the inner piece to the Stant locking gas cap, which oddly enough is far more secure (difficult to remove) than the complete "locking" Stant cap.  Plus i never have to worry about the lock jamming again.  All it takes is gorilla grip hands to unscrew.

I lost the cap cap from one of my Suzukis, and got an aftermarket one.  Bad decision, plus it was a locking one, which I didn't need.

I got a Suzuki one from a scrapyard, and all is now well.  Interestingly, although the caps from my Cappuccino, X-90 and GV all have different part #s, thay are all interchangeable.  Just get whatever's available, without worrying about the model.

wel i've been driving awile now and no luck with this evaporation leak code. i have tried reseting the code with the scanner but after a 10 min drive it comes on again. no visual leak or wet spot any were under the truck, only thing i can come up with is the black box under the truck, in the front of the gas tank, looks like a box witch i call it the polution system box lol. woud that be the bugger?

Or.... it could be the damned fuel cap doesn't seal (fit) properly.

its not the cap, i have install 4 so far and still no changes, the original and the one on my part truck havent change anything, the 2 other ones were taken off friends truck witch their check engine lights were not on (so i figure the caps are good) and it havent changed anything. i did turn off the code with the code scanner between each cap swap, so i am pretty confident its not my issue

Do these vehicles have EVAP vent solenoids on them, or are they too "old"?

Reason I ask is because I see about 3-5 Silverado's and Impala's at work each week that have a P0455 code (large EVAP leak) and its almost always this vent solenoid getting stuck open. Or sometimes the purge solenoid as well. Just a thought.

I'm pretty certain they do - except that Suzuki doesn't call it a solenoid - how about "valve, evap cstr purge"

Ahh, so it's part of the canister that's mounted over by the tank?

Hmmmm?  Evap canister related, possibly?  I was just looking at mine while installing a new muffler today thinking it is awfully exposed where it is located.  Is this part (valve) repairable/replaceable or would this concern replacing the whole assembly if not functional?  Could a loose or cracked hose on the assembly throw this code?

A loose or cracked hose could cause the code, because a loose or cracked hose could allow pressure to escape. As I am a Chevy tech, I have to admit that I have never worked on a Tracker, other then to do an oil change. We only have one customer that has an 03 ZR2, and she takes such good care of it, and drives it so little, that we never see it. Therefore, I don't have any experience with the EVAP system of these vehicles.

However, I know the full size GM trucks (Silverado & Sierra) and the Impala's (these vehicles are the most common we see with this issue) it is able to be replaced separately. But, its mounted remotely, by itself.

Nope - it's under the hood, as is the canister - at least that's where it is on my 98GV
