Quick tranny question from a newbie.

Hi everyone. I have a feeling I will be visiting these forums quite often in the future. I am planning to swap in a 1.3 or 1.6 engine and 5 speed into my 1959 Austin Healey bugeye and I have a quick question about the Samurai transmissions. Is the thranny from the 2 weel drive the same as the 4wd, or does the 4x4 tranny have the transfer case built into it? I am trying to figure out if I need to begin my search for a 2wd or 4wd doner, or if either will work. Thanks,

Yes the samurai gearbox is the same in 2wd and 4wd and it's separate from the transferbox.

For a small sportscar like the healey I would reccomend the swift GTI engine, 1.3 litre twincam 16v. 100hp and likes to rev, would be ideal for that pupose I think.  And it bolts up 100% to the samurai transmission.

The Tracker/Sidekick transmissions are different between 2wd & 4wd.  The transfer case bolts onto the transmission in 4wd.  The main difference is that the 2wd has a longer output shaft, and bolt on tail shaft housing.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

With that being said, could I use a 4x4 tranny, or would my best bet be to locate a 2wd unit? Also, are the Tracker/Sidekick the same setups as the Samurai? I'm an old school hot rodder... big blocks, nail heads, etc and the 4 banger stuff is all new to me. This will be my first venture into a swap like this. It's nothing I can't handle fabrication and mechanical wise, but my knowledge base is near zip when it comes to which of these engines/trans, etc are compatible with each other.

The 4x4 transmission has an ouput shaft bearing and seal, so it should be useable w/o the transfer case. 
I suggest you find something wrecked that you can get the whole donor vehicle, then check motor height/length-transmission and determine if you can fit it.  Having the donor vehicle will save you lots of frustration as you do the transplant.
That swift at 100 hp (I believe will mate up to the Samurai transmission direct) one of the better hp/lbs.  The 1.6 L from kickers is a little taller motor, don't want to run another hood scoop on a Healey if you don't have to, just to fit a motor under it.
Which Healey do you have?  What is your motor length & height? 
It takes getting used to using rpm all the time, for an 'OLD SCHOOL HOT RODDER".

Brd Hntr... Not sure about the original engine specs as the engine was gone when I picked up this project. However, fordem's link shows a great comparision between the 1.3 and the stock engine and really helps clear up some of the questions I have.

That is a good article.  The swift 1.3l has double the hp as the Samurai 1.3l, and the Samurai does not have the same transmission as the Trackers/Sidekicks.
This should make a good project.  It will be interesting to see how it goes.
