1988 samurai Need help major
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:22:45 PM »
I own a 1988 Suzuki Samurai JX it runs fine no bogging no sputter clinks or clunks but my engine will not stop burning oil. i tried all new spark plugs. thicker oil. I even replaced the engine with another stock 1.3. But it still smokes the same. the first engine we found out it was the fuel pump after we had already switched it out. but the motor was junk anyways. this fuel pump seems to be fine but i just cant wrap my head around why it still burns so much oil. iv tried so much and i am so frustrated with it i just want to sell the thing. but shes my baby so im not. PLEASE anyone who can help me is greatly appreciated

Have you done a compression check yet? If not you should to see if you have a ring issue. It could also be valve guides.
I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)

as stated.... valve guides, or rings....   posibly valve stem seals as well

the other posibility is a blown head gasket, but thats usualy white smoke (caused by water/antifreez in the exaust)  you can usualy tell if there is oil in the radiator (oil floats so it will be at the higest point. ie the radiator cap) & or water in the oil (look for milky / foamy stuff under the oil cap & dipstick after running it & for the oil level to be too high)

Can you clarify "burns oil"? How much or does it just smoke now? After first motors oil issue of burning, the catalytic converter and even the exhaust system will have oil to burn/smoke for a time after swap...

How long has swap been running in it? Oil disappearing from that motor too?

That's all I got.

i burn bout a quart of oil every 30-40 miles or so. i just replaced all the seals. No water in the oil or in the radiator either. Tomorrow im going to make sure all my vaccum hoses are clear and do a compression test. Today i ran 20-50 in it also i put in motor honey to try to see if it would have an effect. It just made it blow more smoke and its still burning a good amount of oil a day

Mines doing the same damn thing.  I hope someone can help us figure this out.   I checked plugs, they all look the same.   A little black, but all in all not that bad.   I was thinking rings, but haven't done a compression check yet.

It seem so obvious , but how much oil is leaking from, say the rear seal ? ( very common)  . The Compression check is always the first thing, even before you purchase a car that's represented as " runs great, needs nothing".
It seems many out there seem to get into these Samurai's without checking them out first, even for rust. That will change as the the supply starts drying up and prices climb. That day is still a while  away, but its coming.
