For what it's worth for those wishing they had a luggage rack...I just drilled holes through the exisiting rails to fit some U bolts and matching holes through some 2x4's i had laying around...voila! Been on there for several years with plenty of abuse and never an issue.

I always tie the load to the RAILS not just to the 2x4's!!

When I get around to it I will replace the 2x4's with steel tubing and that will probably look a lot better.

i find the manufacturers sell them too expensive for what they are, so simple to make them cheaper, they probably use about 50$ of material and sell them for 250-300$

My first "rack" was 2x2's notched to sit atop the rails, and I would strap the load and the rack to the rails with ratchet tie-downs - I used that for a year until I picked up a set of chinese made cross bars 20mmx30mm rectangluar hollow section which slide through a sheet metal foot that clamps them to the rails - simple & sturdy - a year later, I've just picked up a roof basket to go on top of those cross bars.

I know I thought about getting the cross bars off a blazer and just cut them to length, simple and would mount up easy. At my local U-Pull it is $20 for a roof rack system. Way better than the $250-up the dealer wants.
Finally a 4low on a small SUV with GREAT MPG!!!!
