transfer case removal

Can the transfer case be taken out of an auto Tracker with a 3" BL without taking the trans. out?  I know about the bolt on the top that is usually covered by the top loader on the 5 speed. But with the 3 speed auto I shouldn't have any problems with that, right?

Yes, should come out reletively easy. Don't forget to drain it before you remove either driveshaft.

Yeah that front D shaft will get ya if you aren't careful. I'm installing gears and twin sticks. Should I use some fancy gear oil?

Not sure about the " fancy oil. " Who's gears are you using? They may have a reccomendation on break in oil but most likely just a good 80/90 gear oil will do. I use Valvoline Synth and I put a bit of Lucas in mine for insurance.  While you have the case apart you might want to add a couple of more oil feed grooves to the thrust bearing that sits behind the big output gear ( that's the new one your installing.) I had galling problems with the Calmini gears and the guy that builds the t cases at TrailTough tipped me to that little trick. He says he does it on ALL tcase gearset installs.
Normally this thrust bearing will have two grooves opposite of each other, you want to cut two more to make it look like a cross. More oil to the back of the gear is the goal and this seems to really help.

I bought a set of T.T. gears. Does the output gear you are talking about have 2 holes drilled in it (the old factory gear)?  If so the new replacement has 2 grooves on the top and 2 grooves on the bottom, kinda looks like an = sign.....
I should put more grooves in it going the other way?

Sorry, I'm just a little lost here. I understand the concept of grooving it, but want to make sure we are talking about the same part.


I didn't receive any info with the gears about any break in process or oil. I usually use the cheap stuff from the auto parts store but I want to use something better with these gears. These gears cost as much as the Tracker did when I bought it!!!

I am thinking he is saying adding more grooves, so the grooves are at  3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock.
