I guess that would imply that its not opening; have you checked the vacuum lines and tested the VSV?

If you have the 1.6, 16v, then you have the EGR tube, which often gets clogged as well as the exhaust manifold passage.  All components need to be operable in the system.  With the EGR valve removed, blow compressed air into each opening (intake and exhaust), if it backfeeds from either, you have restriction.  Good luck

ranger..are you talking about the silver metal line from the egr that bolts to the back of the in tank? just make sure that line isn't plugged.

If it is a 16-valve, there is a passage cast into the side of the head as rhinoman mentioned.

This passage connects to the intake side of the head and can get blocked by carbon.

I am not absolutely sure, but there may be something similar on the 8-valve head.

Your EGR will not work well if this passage is blocked.

Yes, it's stainless steel.  Make sure it's clean as well as the intake opening.  There's also a passage within the exhaust manifold casting that gets clogged.
