My NEW Sami
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:38:29 AM »
Hey all,

So I recently sold my SAS sidekick, was going to go jeep, but picked up a 1987 Samurai...couldn't leave the zukes... But I think I got a good deal for the sami, $4200. I wanted to list whats been done to it, and see what else i need. I have some extra cash left over from the sidekick, so let me know where the sami needs improvement.

1987 Samurai w/t Jeep eater suspension kit

Engine
Fresh 1.3 less than 1500 miles that runs on PROPANE
header
high flow cat
dumped exhaust

Drive train
New tranny w/t center-force clutch
6.4-1 transfer case gears w/t twin sticks
4:56 differential gears
ARB in the Rear
Lockrite in the front
Chromoly shafts w/t birfeild rings upfront
high steer

Body
Low Range front & rear bumpers + sliders
Hard, soft, and bikini top
LED lights, HID front lights
Brand new 33x10.5x15 Toyo mts
winch on a hitch that mounts front or rear

Things I think I need are;
Power steering, more power lol, roll cage, bigger winch, tachometer, Kong t-case mount... Let me know. Thanks

Thanks! It doesn't have a stinger on it, but I am a little skeptical about a receiver winch as well. The lift is the jeep eater YJ kit from RockyRoad.  Its weird though, my ass end sits lower than the front, but my buddy has the same lift on his Sami and his does the same thing. Is this a common issue with their YJ lift? I will hopefully get pics up soon, it just got done receiving a new coat of paint. GLOBAL BLUE! once I get everything put back on I snap some pics.

Anyone have experience of the Kong t-case mount vs the ZOR t-case mount?

You could add another main leaf in the rear spring packs. Just cut the eyes off and slide it in, that would add abit of lift and also help with axle wrap (if you have an issue with it).

I have the Kong t-case cradle. If I was going to do it again I would go with the ZOR t-case cradle to get away from the factory style mounts. I had problems with finding a t-case mount that had some stretch but not too much.... if I had a ZOR t-case cradle this would not have been an issue.

Ill snap some pictures this weekend, it just got through paint, but I did get another set of YJ springs, so this could be an option. My buddy just used lift blocks in his, but I hate blocks, especially when I am geared so low.

Thanks for the info on the ZOR. I think I will save the money and get that one. Is there any modifications needed to bolt in the ZOR case mount?

Chromoly shafts w/t birfeild rings upfront

Are you saying chromo rear shaft and stock shafts with birfield rings up front?  Or front chromos with birfield rings?

Thanks! It doesn't have a stinger on it, but I am a little skeptical about a receiver winch as well. Is this a common issue with their YJ lift?

If both set low in the rear, then I'd say that is normal for the kit.
If you want to raise the rear, you could add another YJ leaf, like suggested.  Or you could add a leaf from like an S10 or S-blazer rear pack.  I added a leaf from a blazer pack to my rear YJs and it gave me around 2" of lift and didn't change the flex of the springs (at least not enough that was noticeable).  It firmed up the pack, so it didn't lean as bad when in off-camber situations.  I like the added leaf a lot.
I definitely would not add a block, to raise it up.

Weight transfer?  For what?  Are you drag racing your samurai?

I would wait for it....
Did you check with Low Range Offroad to see if they stock any ?
I know they sell them, not sure if they stock any.

My Mighty Kong works fine. I am just not a fan of the stock style t-case mounts currently available.
Solid mounts transfer too many vibes. Stock mounts are too stretchy. Bolt through can oval hole the mounts.
Polaris mounts are a good middle of the road but Rock 4x Fab has some new ones that will hopefully come out soon that should be the solution to the t-case rubber mounts.
Sounds like some real world testing may be underway soon : http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=45701

Thanks for the replies. Chromo rear and rings front, sorry. My buddy just ordered the calmini, so I will see what that looks like. And I'll try the adda leaf, I got two extra packs with the sami. I took it out this weekend and absolutely love this thing. I was able to flex on my buddies jeep on thirty threes, still had some more flex!
