Swapping from an auto to a man. How hard?
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:05:23 PM »
I just spotted a 95' 2dr tracker 4x4 with an auto for $1700 on craigslist. It already has a lift and seems decently clean for the price.

Just wondering if doing a manual swap would be direct... or would I have to get different mounts... a different transfer case... etc?

Thankyou in advance,

Marty

depends will need ecu and clutch asseb. pedals but as long as the tranny is from same motor (i.e) 8v or 16v then they should just bolt up

Most people swap the manual out for the auto to gain power back from larger wheels and tires. The 3spd comes stock with 4.3 thirds, so for example using a gear calculator with new 31" tires the required gears are 4.99 with the 5.12's from the manual trans equipped trackers being the closest without being underdrivin. The manual trans would require 5.66 gears per the calculator and are costly and hard to find.

Autos and manuals use the same tcase.
You will not need a different ECM, when going from an auto to a manual.
You will need the pedal assembly from a manual in the 92ish-95 year range (I believe the earlier 89/90, maybe 91 pedal assemblys are mounted a little differently.  And I know the 96 and up pedal assemblys are different than yours).

My students often ask me how much it would cost or how hard it would be to swap a manual in an auto vehicle.

While this truck is easier than most because there should be plenty of donor parts available - my answer is still the same.

The easiest and cheapest way to swap a manual for an auto is to sell the auto truck and buy a manual truck.

This is coming from a person who has three Land Cruisers with transmissions they never came with so take it with a grain of salt.

Did you buy this vehicle? It sure didn't last long on CL. I waned to look at it but could not find the time.

No. I did not find the time to go look |removethispart|@ it.

I probably should not buy one until I get to my next duty station anyways. I will be moving across country in a few months with a family in tow. So I suppose I would not have the time to get everything checked out and tuned up before the move. For all I know... I will get orders to Alaska. lol

I swapped out my auto to manual and the ecu does not need to be replaced. From man to auto it does....I also swapped up to 512 gears from the donor. It was a big job, 35 hours or so but the body was good and worth the swap. The pedal assembly from donor was half the trouble as the steering goes down the middle. I kept the driveshafts from donor as well as I didnt know if the length was the same. I peeled back the dash part way and unbolted the steering from firewall for extra play and removed the driver seat so I could access the under dash area without any back pain. The donor was a 91(japan) and the recipient was a 94(cami) both 2dr 4wd. I tried to find my more comprehensive post on suzuki forum but couldnt... :sleepy: If you want to contact me go ahead

You DO NOT need the auto ECU with the 3spd, the lockup convertor can be manually controlled with a simple toggle switch vrs having to swap over the wiring harness and ECU. If you run a auto ECU with a 5spd I believe the later years will throw a CEL. The 4spd auto is longer than the 3spd/5spd trans(which are the same length).

The pedal setup would probably be the hardest/longest portion of the swap.
