5 speed transmission interchange for a 1995 suzuki sidekick 4x4
« on: January 29, 2012, 07:49:12 AM »
I have a 1995 Suzuki sidekick with a 16 valve engine, the 8th number in my serial # is v, which I have read stands for a 4v engine. My question is would a transmission and transfer case fit from a 16 valve  G16a motor. I have read that the 8 valve will not interchange and then I have also read that they will interchange. Some information I have read states that all the 16 valves transmissions will interchange. I am so confused now that I was wondering if any one has done such an interchange or has a book that will tell you what will interchange. Thanks

the transmissions are interchangable between the 8v and 16v variants. I think there may be a slight gearing difference, but not that great.

The 1.6 8V and 1.6 16V trannys are interchangeable.  Depending on whether or not the vehicle had the tranny to engine braces, you may have to swap bellhousings (if you need to run the braces).
The tranny ratios are identical between them, for gears 1-4.  The 8V trannys have a .86 5th gear.  The 16V trannys had a .795 5th gear.
The tcases are identical/interchangeable between 8V and 16Vs (years 89-98).  They do have different speedo gears in them, depending on whether they came from one with an auto or manual and depending on the axle gears.  If you want the speedo to read correctly, it is best to get a tcase from a trackick that had the same tranny and axle gears as yours.

BTW, in 95 the 8th digit in the VIN will always be a U.  If it is a 2 door 2wd, it will have a 1.6 8V engine and if it is a 4 door (2wd or 4wd) or a 2 door 4wd it will have a 1.6 16V engine.

Thank you for the information. My 8th number is a v but there may be a difference from one made in Japan or Canada/USA

No, they both use the same VIN format.  But you should have the info you need...good luck with your search.
