Basically wondering if it would be bad to replace the studs (oil pan) with bolts. Then I wouldn't have to remove the oil pan just to get at the pump.

All the oil pumps I've seen have those brass covered studs, is this just to help line up the oil pan when installing it?

I wouldnt think it would matter. The oil pump is aligned by two dowel pins on the front of the engine.  Those studs must be to help with installation of the oil pan.  Recently, I did this job.  I just spun out the studs with a pair of vice grips, then re-installed them the same way.  If you grab them lightly it doesnt damage the threads and they spun out really easy. I didnt have to remove the oil pan.

Studs do provide a far better and more uniform clamping force than bolts.

The easiest way to remove studs is by double nutting, unless you have specific stud removal tools.
