transmission noise or throw out bearing??
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:56:16 AM »
im a new owner of a 86 sammi!!!!!! my transmission makes a "buzzing" noise at idle in neutral and in every gear but 4th, but when i push in the clutch the noise goes away. could this be the transmission bearings? or the gears? or could it be a throw out bearing? while driving the noise does not get louder with increased RPM'S. Any input could  help thanks

tell tale sign of tranny bearings. 4th is straight thru 1=1, so it's a telltale sign when everything is noisy BUT 4th.

It might be the TO bearing too, since it quiets up when you
push the clutch in, regardless the trans has to come out, so
you should change the TO bearing anyway

Pretty easy, drop the T-case first, and remove the middle
shaft, can be done without a jack if you have muscles, or
with a friends help.

The shifters need to come off, they have a Bayonet retainer,
push and twist and the sticks come right out, but make sure
they are in neutral first, it's just easier on assembly later

As a general rule - with a correctly adjusted clutch, the throw out bearing will not make noise when the clutch pedal is released (even if the bearing is defective) - the throw out bearing should rotate only when the clutch pedal is depressed, at all other times it should not be in contact with the rotating clutch pressure plate.

On the other hand - if the clutch free play is not correctly adjusted, it is possible for the throw out bearing to be in contact with the fingers on the pressure plate, and it will make a noise that goes away when the clutch is depressed.

So as a general rule - if the noise is present when the clutch is depressed, then it is the throw out bearing, if the noise is present when the clutch is released, that rules out the the throw out bearing.  If the noise is present with the vehicle stationary in neutral, clutch released, it'll typically be a transmission noise and as locjaw has said - if it's present in every gear except fourth, it's probably the transmission bearings.

Hey wild you can leave the xfer case in on a Sammie. the trans just has to be clocked at a weird angle coming out and going back in, and if you get too pissed off at the cross member you can cut the corner off of it.

True, but I find it easier to pull the tcase.  It gives you more room to move the transmission around.
