Heyyo.

First post on the website but an active forum member elsewhere and soon to be here.

I just has the alternator on my 1998 Suzuki Sidekick Sport JLX 4x4 rebuilt by a reputable spot here in town. I took it out for a drive shortly after reinstall and she drove great! Got it home and popped the hood while it was running to be a nerd and listen to the engine a bit and do some seafoaming... As soon as I snuck my fingers between hood and grille the engine stopped dead. Tried to crank it but there was no power to anything. Not even in the ACC position. Upon further inspection the 80 amp BATT fuse (fuse 1) was fried. I've looked through some electrical diagrams and it seems the only part that runs in line after the fuse is the alternator. I was worried the starter was the issue but this particular fuse wouldn't blow if it was the problem, correct?

Question here is, what are the common issues I can look into further that may be causing the continual short for Fuse 1 (80amp BATT)???

I was using the site below to view the wiring diagram.

The link below is the diagram I was using to view the battery lead going to the 80amp fuse and beyond.

I have tried to just replace the fuse twice to no avail. Any lead would be appreciated.

A bad diode in the regulator portion of the alternator could cause this, you
might want to pull it off and have them check it before you pull your hair out
trying to find the issue

Thanks for the suggestion and welcome! I figured I'd pull it off right away to examine it anyway. After baffling my brain on if there are any other components that run in line with this 80amp fuse, I'm pretty confident that there has to be a short in the alternator.

I would look at the voltage regulator of the rebuilt alternator.

THEN, order a GM alt bracket from Trail Tough and change over to the Delco/Remey 12Si alternator. It is the absolutely best upgrade for the electrical system. The stockie has an issue at night, when running lights, radio, and all of the engines electrical demands(and hope it doesnt rain).

I don't see the GM alt conversion kit anywhere on Trail Tough. I'm looking to just get this vehicle back to road ready solid driveability. Fixing it up to either sell or have my lady drive on the regular. I'll post it up in the classifieds soon her for you gentlemen to squabble over. ^_^

Thanks again for all the pointers. I'm pretty mechanically savvy so figuring this out only takes some time.
