not sure what i have
« on: May 29, 2011, 08:12:41 PM »
I have an 85 sammy according to the info on it but the motor isn't what comes in a 85. The reason I say this is bc it has a side mount carb unlike the top mounts. I found this out when I ordered a redline carb kit and it wouldn't fit. Need help to get a new carb bc the oem doesn't work anymore. Thanks

From the sounds of it, someone has swapped out the factory intake and carb for a motorcycle or webber style carb. You may have to find yourself an intake as well as a carb.
I'll wheel with anyone, even Jeeps as longs as they can keep up

Can you post a picture of it?  What is wrong with the vehicle that you are replacing the carb, the side-drafts are usually pretty solid.

You can download a image resize application for windows, or just use Picasa or another program to cut them down to size.

Does your valve cover say SUZUKI on it?  You may have an SJ-410.

I will look into that. It does say SJ 410....What's the difference. Oh it has two other letters after the 410 but can't rember them. Have to look at them when I get home if they mean anything.

The two letters are what model you have.  There were 4 models, the Van, Tin-Top, Soft Top with half-doors and Soft Top with full doors.

Ok, so it's an SJ-410.  On the plus side, you have a much more unique little ride.  On the down side it's what came out before the Samurai and parts are harder to find.

Smaller Motor - 970cc 4cyl.  45hp, 49lb's torque stock.
Smaller Transmission - 4 speed vs 5 speed.
Smaller Axles - 3" less width.
Smaller 3rd Member - Cannot use standard Sammy lockers.  But you can find them on E-Bay.
Inboard Springs - 1.5" further inboard on each side.
Different T-Case - 84 and earlier can't use Sammy T-case gears.  But you can swap in a Samurai T-case.

Plus side:
Sidedraft carb - Doesn't stall on hills like a standard carb.
T-Case Gears - 10% lower in high and low range then a Samurai.
Diff Gears - 4.10 stock in stead of the 3.89
Drive-Line E-brake - Makes swapping to disk brakes in the rear easier.  This can swap onto a Samurai T-case.

That is the basics.  If it's old enough you also get a metal dash which is pretty cool looking.  If you need any parts for it do yourself a favor and give Hawk Suzuki a call.  They can get you the right part the first time.

My SJ-410 might be modified a bit.  Still has the stock motor and transmission though.  :D
