Suzuki considering new small pickup?
« on: July 26, 2011, 01:11:19 PM »
Saw this on Autoblog today:

Quote from: Autoblog.com
When asked what could be coming down the pipeline in the next few years, a senior exec at Suzuki told Autoblog that the automaker could import a compact truck to the U.S. based on the next generation Suzuki Jimny.

If they brought over a Jimny-based pickup, that'd likely be my next new vehicle.

I really like the concept. I've heard the Jimny itself may be imported by VW with their badging.

It would be interesting to see a pickup based off of that concept but they've showed the Xhead around before though... I'm all for it but just make it a bit bigger.

I'm betting is that they are eyeing the soon to be built LWB, 4-door Jimny for importation into the US.  This vehicle is being built in India for the 2012 model year.

Then they might have an option to turn it into a pickup.  Kind of like Mopar does for the 4-door Wrangler.

2013 should bring a host of changes to the Suzuki lineup including SX4 and Grand Vitara. Maybe it'll be a '13 if they do it ...

Man, would I love a small, capable NEW 4x4 from Suzuki (with a manual trans, too while I'm adding to the wish list!).

If they can survive in the US market place.  The VW-Suzuki alliance hasn't exactly being playing out well either.  I know that VW has held Suzuki back from bringing the Swift to the US market.

Yeah, I've been reading a lot about the partnership, if you can call it that. I've heard it's more the yen-to-dollar ratio holding the Swift back, but I dunno. I know VW said we were supposed to get the Polo, too, but that hasn't happend. It makes me wonder if it's a Swfit vs. Polo thing.

They tried to give it a big truck look, but I think it's too small to pull
off the look, instead it's looking like an oversized side by side and it's
covered with plastic front and rear

I saw one of these in the flesh last weekend at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.  Suzuki had a nice trailer setup.  If they actually built the Xhead, I might buy one if the price point was right.  It looks like a little Freightliner, and the overall dimensions aren't too much bigger than a Sammy.  Very cool trucklet.  But what I really liked was the Suzuki Lapin.  Nissan Cube idea done right, without all the unnecessary quirkiness.  Just a straightforward solid little microbox.  I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat.  If only they would sell them in the US....

I just don't think that many people in the US want to buy small cars, maybe the market is changing and the time is right for Suzuki. Suzukis best sales were 117K in 2007 in the world's biggest market, that wouldn't even be a record month in the UK and this isn't a big market.
I don't know what you guys think? is the US market going small? Suzukis biggest selling cars are the Alto, Wagon R and Jimny, none of which have been sold in the US.

I agree with this article.  Americans are too fat to drive small cars.

my turn! ;D

I like the little fugly pickup, I want one (but I want one of everything and two of others).

A four door LWB jimney? (yep want one of those too)

and is the American market changing? were being forced too. If we want to actually be able to afford to use our "freedom", we have to find cheaper ways to do it. the cost of living is going through the roof, insane taxation has just begun, hell the cost of fuel alone is keeping my family from doing what we want to do.

if we have another four years of our "steal from the working and give to Cull's and illeagles" damn socialist leadership were all going to be living, 5 family's to a shack with one shared car. (a small cheap one).

well back to work I guess, some freeloader crack addict need a hand out.... ::).

PHEW......rant over, that felt good.
