Toyota cv vs Vitara cv. simple question.
« on: May 23, 2011, 01:37:58 AM »
Have had someone blow a hole in my current plan to mod the front of my vit to fit toyota cv's.

Someone made the statement that toyota pickup cv's are no more stronger than that of the standard vitara cv. Its the fact that they are readily available, making them cheaper, that many people do the mod to run them.

Is there any truth to this statement??

any help appreciated.
cheers

I did do a search prior. There is alot of reading about whats is needed and how to do it. With no firm statement of the cv's actually being stronger. The statement of being the same strength, has been made by one of the local guys who has been moding vits for years and have trusted him on alot of other theories. Strikes me as odd that people would go to all the effort if it wasnt THAT much stronger than stock.

again. cheers for your time.

They are a bit stronger, but what kills most cv's on lifted rigs is the angles.  That being said, you can order Toyota CV's in chromoly if you need them.  Plenty stronger then.

Are you currently loosing cv joints or just looking to avoid that fate in the future?

have gone from 31 inch tyres with no locker, too 33 inch tyres with a lockright in the front. just trying to reduce snapping in the future while its off the road.

Flex is a big killer, so you might want to look into some limiting straps.   Once the CV's get to a certain angle they tend to start breaking rather quickly.

It looks like the replacement axle shafts aren't as strong as you get with the old OEM stuff, so a lot of people are sticking to junkyard replacements.
