Transmission Issue
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:26:31 PM »
Well my tranny was leaking a decent amount out of the bell housing but I didn't notice it untill I was on a little incline then it started leaking pretty good... So when I took the tranny out i noticed it was trickling out of the input shaft when i had it on a bit incline but fine when level for the most part, checked the rear main that looked fine. Could it be my seal inside is bad? Also the throw out bearing was broke where it clips onto the fork and was covered in gear oil.

could be a loose front bearing allowed the input shaft to damage the seal

There should be very little to no movement of the input shaft up and down

Ok yeah then that bearing should be fine then because I was messing with the input shaft last night trying to see if there was any play in it... well I have 33s on it with stock gearing and drove it around 40 miles so maybe it happened while I was driving it, but then again it did rattle when I would let off the clutch before I even started driving it. But I didn't notice anything leaking untill I started driving it.

I've had to replace rock-hard seals in my '93 Samurai -- front main seal and the transmission (front) seal, in addtion to the usual valve cover and distributor seals.  Our rigs are getting older and it's no surprise that leaky seals come with the territory. Speaking from personal experience, getting older is the pits, but it's better than the alternative....

Well got the cover off... this might be a dumb question but I wanna be sure before I out it all back together. Should fluid be leaking out of the bottom black bearing? OH and by the way the seal was rock hard!
