High beam indicator/ dome light
« on: March 30, 2011, 07:04:19 PM »
Hope you guys can help with this one. Recently I noticed that my dome light wasn't working. I checked the bulb and it is good. The crazy thing is that when I switch the dome light on, my high beam indicator comes on, however it only comes on if my high low switch is in the low position! I could REALY use my dome light, and the high/ low indicator is just annoying. I recently installed an aluminum dash, but can't imagine I got anything crossed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way, vehicle is an 88 Sami.

Does your hi/low switch work as designed? In other words, when the headlights are on, it flips them hi or low in the correct position?  Best thing to do is check for power when you turn the dome light on.  I know on my dome light (96 Tracker) the switch doesn't always want to turn the light on.  Never had the high beam indicator turn on at the same time though.  Also, was the dome light working before your aluminum dash conversion?  If it was a crossed wire between the indicator circuit and the dome light circuit, you'd think the dome light would still light up.  So I'd start there.  Make sure you're getting power to the dome lamp.  And if you're not, trace the wire back.  Check all your fuses of course, but there's probably a wire shorting to power somewhere.  Hope this helps!

The dome light has an "always hot" +12V feed and is controlled by grounding the other side - either through the dome light switch, or through the door switches.

The headlights are quite similar - an "always hot" +12V feed with the individual high/low selection again being done by grounding the other side.

Now when you switch the dome light on, you're getting a current flow through the high beam indicator to the dome light, through the dome light switch to ground - crossed or shorted wires would be my guess.

Yes, believe it or not (Put it in your book of memories)
I would agree with fordem!!!  "The solution is the problem.... and is not to be between us all")
This is how the system works and you are losing a ground circuit on one side or the other (as in wildgoody's post).

Same scenario happens when you lose ground a your trailer, step on the brakes and your tail lights go out!
