Time for a New Clutch !!!
« on: April 23, 2011, 07:19:03 AM »
Hey Guys & Gals, Gearheads of ages.....
With the recent 8" of snow Tuesday, that melted off with the 1" of rain Yesterday, Early this morning I & my boys went
out on our own "Test Trail" behind "Da Shop" and "GIVE HER THE BEANS DAD" had the clutch Slip Twice.
Not a constant slip, & no bad smells,...... YET!

BUT......I am no longer in DENIAL!!!
The clutch will have to be replaced. (Oh, how I hate doing clutch jobs!!!)

MY QUESTION IS;  What clutches have you been running as I am NOT going to put a "Stock" rebuild unit in
as, again;....OH, How I HATE DOING CLUTCH JOBS!! (I'd rather go to the Dentist!!)

LowRangeOffRoad offers 2 heavy duty units:
PetroWorks Heavy Duty Dual Material model
                                                 AND,
Trail Tough's "Vulcan" which looks like a much heavier built unit
                                                                for about $23.00 more.

I  want a GOOD LONG LASTING clutch that can take Trail Abuse,
But not SO TOUGH that your leg falls a Sleep & Gets the "Shakes" if you catch a long Traffic Light!!
or Acts Like A "Rockford" clutch (in or out)
All Opinions ACCEPTED!!

Thanks CAPT

Centerforce makes a good clutch. I have not had any issues with the ones that we use in our trucks, even when having to "kick out" constantly while in town. They hold like a madman when crank on the engine, too.

Capt,

I found a good clutch for my '96 from a company on ebay.  Gripforce-clutches is the name of the online store.

The one that I got was an "F1 Racing Stage 2 performance street clutch kit"  It is a carbon fiber disk, new pressure plate with 6 springs(instead of factory style of 4), throw out brg and pilot brg. in one package.     Cost $133.00 with delivery to my door in about 5-6 days.

Got it about 2 months ago.  Between myself and my wife have put roughly 2500 miles on it w/o any issues.

I also got a new flywheel from Autozone (local chain parts house) for $79.00 plus tax just because like you I don't like taking things apart very much and didn't want to have suprises.  Was glad that I did, I got inside and found 4 pretty good hotspots.  I also found those online as well but didn't want to pay the same plus the shipping for them.  Didn't spend the time though to research Sachs parts listings to find the "right/light one."  If you take the time have been told they have disks that are 7-10lbs and that would mean less rotating mass and faster rpm builds for more power.

I picked the Stage 2 as I wanted to get something stronger than stock but didn't want to go all the way to the dual force Centerforce clutch.  My wife drives ours quite a bit and needed something that she wouldn't complain about.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the replies!!

I will check these leads out B4 I part with my hard earned green backs.

I figure I still have a little life left in this clutch, I'll just have to stay off the"Red Bull" before going out on the trails
until I get Stuff (Spelled S H I T) out of the way in the shop to do it.

Again Thanks,

Capt,

Glad to help.  I just saw though that I screwed up when talking about parts from Sachs.  Was supposed to be FLYWHEEL not disk.

If you didn't know they make the majority of the racing and performance flywheels around the planet.  They have several ones that if you know the specs of your unit you can match one up and get that 7-10 lb. weight unit that I was talking about.

I realize we're talking about a different truck here, but I put in the kragen/o'reilly clutch in my 8v Tracker this past summer. It is made by Sachs and it's been good to me. Slips when I want it to and firm the rest of the time.

FWIW I have a 1.6 8v and the experts on here told me the 8v and 16v have the same flywheel but the 16v clutch is 5/8" larger diameter. I went with the bigger clutch and it did fit with no problems. The pedal doesnt feel too stiff and I do enough city driving to know. I dunno if you have a 1.6 swap but I though I'd throw that out there.
God put me on earth to accomplish a certain number of things.  Right now I am so far behind, I will never die.
