I ran Silverstar Ultras in the high and low beams in my '03 Silverado, and Silverstars in the fog lamps...after a year and a half, one of the low beams blew...I just put all 6 factory bulbs back in and they're STILL working.  Kinda disappointed about that.  But they worked wonders...but I found out that the leveling kit on the truck pointed the headlight beams out further and I love the light pattern now, even with stock bulbs.
I have silverstar ultras in my 90 Tracker and love them...going on over a year and a half now and still working...does not bother me if they go out because I figure 50 bucks every couple years is minor maintenance...
In the other truck, 50 bucks x3 sets of lights is more than I wanted to spend so that's why I went back to stock.
Yes, they are brighter, but aren't a "long life" bulb...but probably the best bang for your buck for upgraded factory headlights.
God put me on earth to accomplish a certain number of things.  Right now I am so far behind, I will never die.

I used to work as an autoparts counterman, we sold a ton of silverstars. Everyone at the store actually bought them for their own vehicles too.
First there was the silver star, then came the silver star ultra. The ultra was promoted as the same light with 30% longer life span. My take personally is they came up with marketing "fix" for a small percieved problem as the bulbs all looked the same.
What we found:
-approximately 5% of the vehicles just would last more than about a week with them, no matter how many you tried. Other bulbs were not an issue.
-Approximately 10-15% "ish" died in about 10 to 14 months.
-The rest just kept going so I have no real estimate as to their longevity. One in my wifes truck is still an original from when they first came out (gotta be what 6-7 years?).
Cheers
Rick

Sounds like they are ultra-sensitive to voltage - my guess is the 5% "killer" vehicles had overvoltage or spikey alternator output.

The 10-14 months ones could be bad quality control.

Sorry about the quality of the pics, used my old camera phone..

Silverstar Ultras

Low beams

High beams (notice behind the pickup is lit)

Hella 550 (55W Halogen) driving lights (mounted on my winch mount)

Because the 550s are mounted centrally on the vehicle, I am getting more long range / narrow lighting. The low beams light the road immediately ahead much better and when used together with the 550, they offer excellent lighting for the night..

I even have some Hella Rallye 4000 lights mounted on my roof, but I hardly ever get to use those.. This is what oncoming traffic would see with those on..

lol

for comparison, this is the 550s head on..

http://visionxsuperstore.com/H490/110WattSuperWhitePremiumHi/LowBeamBulbSet.aspx  90 110 watts 2X the watts
Do you think with this higher watts the wiring can take the load?

You don't, but every one in the oncoming lane does.

HID retrofits in halogen lamp housing are illegal in most countries - and the extra brightness is exactly that - bright and unfocussed, you've probably lost range, but never been in a situation where you'd notice it.

Finally got around to getting a set of SilverStar Ultras.  $33.xx off of Amazon.com compared to $40-50 in store locally.  Put them in last night and went on an errand in the dark.  DEFINITELY a larger volume of whiter light.  I can see more, clearer.  I likes.

Thinking about putting them in my Blazer.  Has some off brand supposed 70w H7 bulbs in the housings but I'm not impressed.  Was considering PIAA bulbs but at $80 a set (I need two sets) OUCH!  Might just try the Silver Star Ultras.

I ran the Silverstars for over 3 years back in the day. I loved them for the improvement over the OEM but. I would get about a year or maybe less out of the bulbs and would have to replace them .

3 years ago i went with HID's from one of my suppliers. Now they are 5100k and not that stupid ricer blue BS.

The kit is a 5100K bi Zenon 55watt  soft start system. I love them the out put is 50 times brigther then the silver stars and on high beam my far output is greatly improved.

I rarely get highbeamed. I do alot of highway and back road driving and i would say 1 out of 75 cars in dead of night might highbeam me.

If you get a kit stay away from anything above 5100k and make sure it has bi xenon and not a dual bulb set up. If interested i have a supplier i use in the USA.
