A Little Speaker Help...
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:04:16 PM »
I am rounding the corner to my dash refurbishment and am now ready to install some tunes. I have a AM/FM/CD player and all of the mounting brackets / box din / wiring etc. but would like some input from the Forum on speakers.

I would like to utilize the OEM kickpanel locations. What speakers do y'all have or recomend for this location? I would like something that is durable with a fair amount of base and resonably priced. I don't need anything high powered, just something that will fit and hook up right outta the box. If ya have pics, model numbers, etc that would be oh so kewl!

So what say ya?
I know the voices aren't real.... but they have some pretty kewl ideas!!! Tux.....  ;-)

The OEM kick panel location will limit you to a 4" driver, which in turn will limit the bass, unless you're willing to add a subwoofer - you can use the Crutchfield website to show what after you enter the vehicle.

Thanks for the reply Fordem... I have bought componets from Crutchfield before. I actually did utilize their chart for a suggested listing of speakers shown for a Samurai Sport Utility 4" speaker for this area and 6.5 for the door. Unfortunitly Crutchfield doesn't list a JX model and I don't have door speakers.

I beilieve that a 4" kickpanel speaker as listed is incorrect for my application. I happen to have some 4" Pioneer dash speakers and they are quickly swallowed up inside my kickpanel opening.

In my kickpanel the OEM opening is a 5" diameter that is 3.5" deep with mounting screw locations at 4.25" square. I believe this is a 6.5 round speaker.

I was thinking I could get a nice co or tri axial speaker with a 20oz magnet for this area. That was my reasoning to post. I was hoping some folks would reply with speakers that they had or were using in this area.

I could put anything I wanted down there and fabricate adapters in any shape or thickness. I work in a tool & die shop and have the technology / equipment to produce them.

I would rather just plug and play something on the market though. I am not interested in something super loud or base thumping. Just something decent to listen to on occasion while driving to work.

Sometimes the real to life voice from the crowd speaks much louder and more true than what is read and suggested from the merchant.

Maybe that makes better sense.

A 5" diameter opening with mounting screws at 4.25" square?  Is that a typo?  If not, you ARE looking at a 4" speaker.

Fordem,

Nope not a typo... and no I didn't measure incorrectly. Yes, as had said previously I did take a 4" dash speaker and it fits through the 5" hole. These speakers have the exterior mounting tabs as well.
Likewise, I do believe that a 6.5 speaker is correct although I have not measured 1 and I believe the mounting holes are 4.5 from center to center square. (That would be with the 4 holes drilled to the inside of the speaker frame.) I did take a look at 1 at a 6.5 at a local store the other day and measured the mounting holes based on the relaxed postion of my otstreched hand to be from my index finger to my little finger. This is an approxamate distance of 4.5".
That was 1 of the reasons I posted this topic so that I could receive some positive advice. Something a little better than my finger measurement...
Do you have a speaker recommendation? Afterall that is what I was looking for.  Or, some helpful advice / insight like what Fordguy79 offered.

Up front in the kick panels I have 6.5" off brand marine speakers.  They are plenty loud.  I can hear then rolling on 30" mud tires.  The bass is far from good.  Samurai's are tin cans on wheels and don't lend well for sound.  Subs are picked out of cars every day.  If you have a soft top beware.  Someone else may want it more than you.

Mine is a soft top... Your reply is exactly why I am not going to any great lengths to buy high dollar items for the audio. I am putting in a Dual AM/FM/CD unit. If it gets ripped of so be it.

I have a nice tool box bolted to the floor where most folks have rear seats. It fills the space between the rear portion of the 6 point rollcage. I could mount a sub in the front of it but that would render access to the tools inside the box and it would rattle anything inside it, so I don't want to do that.

Did you choose the marine speakers for fear of water damage? I looked at some PYLE marine speakers but don't know anybody with these so I am reluctant to purchase them. What is the brand of the marine speakers you installed?

I also have the entire inside including the kick panels sprayed with Herculiner. In the rear the side panels are insulated with a polyfoam material that repels water. I also have the ABS inner body panels. That being said mine has no squeeks or rattles inside. Right now I listen for the sound of the 30's but am ready for some tunes. Thanks for the replies I have recieved so far. I appreciate it!

Thanks.... I like the idea of the interior cleaning. I imagine I will be sporting the Bikini Top for most of the summer so the likelyhood of the interior getting wet is great.
