How TF does one pull the plunger out of the booster?

I have a Sidekick 4 door with ABS booster and the plunger does not "simply pull out". Are they different from the older styles?

Is there a trick?

I have a backup plan. I tested a 1/4 drive long sleeve 5/16 socket. The 5/16 part goes inside the booster and engages plunger and the "rounded off" drive side goes into the Subaru  M/C. It works! So I may just leave it like that but I`m still curious about the damn plunger removal.
