95 16 valve transmission swaps
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:35:48 PM »
I am new to the site but have been looking it over for quite some time.  I have a 95 2 door hardtop tracker lsi with a 16 valve and an automatic transmission.  I found a 91 sidekick 4door with a stick and a 8 valve.  I was wondering if the tranny will fit behind my motor or if the swap is worth the trouble.  Also, if the swap is worth it, what would i have to modify to make it work  thank you

I Think it would fit just fine with all the parts that you have, just the rear drive shaft yoke might need to be swapped. But most of the guys around here are going automatic, it gives you another 1.8 to 1 reduction in low range over the stick shift. and much more enjoyable for looking around while driving or following a group.

I read somewhere that the flywheel bolt pattern is different from the 8 valves to the 16 valves  Also, how will my automatic hold up to a lift and larger tires  (30 or 31)  I dont want to be looking for a tranny very often so I thought the 5 speed would be a natural choice

The auto should hold up just fine with the larger tires. I've been running 31's on mine for about 9 years now. The only problem i've had out of it was a few years back when i toasted the trans playing in the mud all day. but i doubt that the tires had anything to do with that. I believe I just over heated it from running wide open all day spinning donuts and drifting. Just add a auxillary fluid cooler to it and you should be just fine.

The "flywheels" will be the same bolt pattern.  The pattern on the end of the crank is the same between 1.6 8Vs and 1.6 16Vs.  There is a spacer that has to be removed from the crank on the trackick with the auto, for the flywheel to bolt on, but that isn't a big deal.

Do you need to change the front pulley (harmonic balancer)?  Just had mine off, don't remember a harmonic balancer (wasn't looking for one either), but -- is it balanced the same anyhow?

No you don't have to swap the crank pulley.  The crank pulleys are balanced and the crank is balanced and the flywheels are balanced, so no need to keep them as "matched sets".
