A new Samurai owner here (1988) looking for your input. While I have not had time to verify it yet it seems the choke takes a long time to kick off in cold weather all the while it is running rough and extremely rich. This is the stock carburetor and does anyone have suggestions or experience in how to remedy this?

Is your pre-heater hose hooked up?  This will help somewhat.

im saving up for a myside kit. you should just go with a myside as well, ive heard nothing but great things from them.

That's like saying "Do an engine swap to fix your oil leak problem."

Mine doesn't run rough in the cold weather, although it does run rich while warming up.  Rough idle points to other problems, not just the choke.  Have you checked everything else out?  Strong ignition?  Vacuum leaks?  Exhaust leaks? Valves adjusted properly?  Dirty carb?  etc?

These items can all contribute to rough idle.  If it stops when it gets warmed up, thats a clue.

Today I changed the spark plugs. Found one vacuum hose broken and replaced it. Cleaned the PVC valve. Changed the fuel filter. It was dirty. Lube the linkages. The choke does not kick open after warm up. I found a piece of binding wire that the previous owner had on it to hold the choke open. With it wired open the engine ran well. Further diagnostics for tomorrow.
