Water pumps....are they all the same?
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:35:13 PM »
I want to start putting together parts to rebuild my '89 Tracker 1.6L 8v engine, but I'm a little confused on water pumps, some places list same part #'s for the 8v and 16v and some places have different part #'s, in pictures they all look the same from the 1.3L sami engines to the 1.6L 8v and 16v. Are they the same? What about oil pumps...are they all the same too? Thanks for your time.

Cheers
Kevin

I think you should be part and engine specific, the 1.6 8v and 16v engines
use a different timing belt, the 16v is wider, so the water pump would have
a longer shaft, tho by only 3/8" to clear the wider belt, and there are other
differences in oil pumps, some 16V engines have a Crank Position sensor and
need a pump with a hole in the bottom to read the star wheel on the crank
cog.

If you were stuck somewhere and need to make it work, that's one story, but
I think you should  order parts based on the engine you are building, unless you
would like to document what works and what doesn't on each engine  ;D that
could be a helpful list

thanks for the clarification, if I had a few spare 8v and 16v engines laying around I would see what works and what doesn't, but I'm past the days of having 5 spare engines for one vehicle, lol.  Maybe I'll avoid buying from the places with wishy-washy part numbers....

There is no difference in 1.6 8V and 1.6 16V water pumps.  While the 16Vs do use a wider timing belt, and the accessories (alternator and PS pump) do set farther away from the front of the engine (they use different brackets and the lower timing belt cog is wider), the water pumps are identical and the difference in accesssory offset is compensated for by a different offset of the water pump pulley, to keep the ribbed belts lined up properly.
There is a difference between 1.3 and 1.6 water pumps.  I don't remember exactly what it is, but they are not identical.
Simple thing to do is to order parts for you specific engine.  That way you know they will fit.
