sami exhaust
« on: November 30, 2010, 09:17:46 PM »
I got an 88 sami with header and 75% of a brand new exhaust. I am running 2'' pipe brand new highflow cat right after the header then about 12'' of pipe in to a brand new generic cherry bomb. I haven't run the pipe to the back yet. just didn't have the material at the time and wanted it to drive. my dad hates the way it sounds and never lets my start it up when he's around. I figure it might sound Little better when I finish the exhaust to the end of the rig witch is about another 4 feet of pipe or so. Before I finish the exhaust I was wondering what everyone else suggests for mufflers. Another thing, I was across town at a guys place sitting in his drive way and this bright lime green sami passes by. That was probably one of the nicest sami's I have ever seen. It sounded just as good as it looked. I noticed his tail pipe looked just like one of those ''rice burner'' Honda's or something. It was a big chrome muffler with about a 3-4'' outlet right under the bumper. I was wondering if it was running two mufflers or that was the only muffler. it wasn't really quite, but not overly loud with a perfect 4 cylinder ''hum'' with a nice ''rappy'' sound. If I could only make mine sound that great. any suggestions or any answers to what the green sami was running would be nice to know. thanks ahead of time.

I run a default Turbo muffler on the back of my SJ-410, sounds great and a perfect match for the engine.  When I get on the gas you can hear it a bit but for the most part it is completely silent.  Under the Tracker I have a Flowmaster, nice and quite for cruising but you can get a bit of noise when you wrap the engine up.  I thought it sounded great until I got behind BRD HNTR's V6 with the dual pipes, but there isn't much of a comparison there.

One issue with running the muffler that far back is that you have to make sure you have room to run it next to the gas tank.  On my SJ with springs under it I had the pipe straight back, ran a 45 degree angle up, have the muffler, then another 45 degree angle that put's it over the axle, then straight out the back.

Here is a good shot of an exhaust from a Samurai that is well put together -

I just have a header direct into a cherry bomb with a turn down.  If your father hears mine, he won't think yours it too loud anymore :)

Another tidbit to consider:

If you DD your truck, you might want to consider running the tailpipe out the side instead of out the back of the truck.

Many people complain of exhaust smells with a rear-facing tip as the exhaust gets caught up un the low presure zone behind the truck then seeps into the back of the cab.  A side-pointing tip dumps the exhaust into the straight-moving stream of air passing by the truck as you move down the road.

Remember:  A Samurai is a box on wheels.  A Dead-Sexy Pontiac GTO or Ford Torino with chrome-tipped dual exhausts is not...

I hope that this helps!
