3-door 1996 Vitara calipers for brakes
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:02:35 AM »
Hello all,

My question in brief, is where can I order these from, and if possible, for a reasonable price? The brake pads need replacing, but cannot be replaced because of the bad condition of the old calipers, which can't be forced into place.

The long version is that here in Sweden, it's not possible for dealers to say for sure how long it would be before they have these in. Suzuki Sweden can themselves supply them, but for 900 euros. Calling a Suzuki garage in Amsterdam, they can get the part and do the work for 800 euros. I would consider having the car there if the job could be done more cheaply.

Can anyone help or offer advice, other than to scrap the car (even that is not so easy, as it has Netherlands plates.) Until now, it has passed the yearly MOT test (APK in Holland) with ease.

MP.

Holy Crap!

That's $1,106.29 in US currency!

You could buy a '96 Sidekick/Tracker with that kind of money in the US!

I am sure that someone here would be happy to send you a prepaid "gift" in the form of a set of remanufactured calipers from a local auto supply store (or "Factors" as they call them in the UK).

I checked at Oreilly Auto Parts and found a completely loaded remanufactured unit (pads included - just bolt it on with turned rotors and bleed) for $131.99 each!  The toughest part of YOU doing the install is getting the rotor off for resurfacing ("turning").

Remember - the calipers are the same on all 3-door Vits from 1996 back to 1989 - at least in the USA.  4-door calipers are larger but CAN be fitted if you use the vented rotor also found on the 4-door.

Just for the heck of it, maybe someone in the UK (closer) can help you...  Try posting your question at http://www.shropshire-suzuki.co.uk/forum/portal.php and see if you can get something inexpensive from across the North Sea...

I hope that this helps!

Over a K for brakes, that's reaching Porsche territory.  And I'm pretty sure even after the swap it still won't brake as well as a Porsche.  :)

Can't you get some from a breaker? I know that there were a few Suzuki breakers in southern Sweden a few years back. Some Spanish Vits have different (Lucas) brakes but all Swedish models were (AFAIK) Japanese built. I could help you with sourcing brake calipers in the UK but you would need to send your calipers to me as they would be needed for exchange.

OOPS!

I forgot about the "core exchange"... The price will be lower if you provide "cores" - your used caliper assemblies.

Thanks for pointing that out, Rhinoman!
