Is the 2.5 a interference type engine ?
« on: August 14, 2010, 07:06:25 PM »
I just purchased a 2001 GV with 2.5 V6 with 106,000 miles . It's in great shape with no rust.I'm just wondering if I should go ahead and replace the timing chain. Also do the 2.5 require valve adjustments like the 1.3 s in the sammy's.

I'm not sure, but I think it is, and why I think they put
a chain in that engine instead of a belt

The 2.5 is an interference engine and has I believe three timing chains - before doing anything else, listen to it from a cold start - if you don't hear the chains rattling, then don't worry about them.

If you do hear them rattling, start with an oil & filter change, 10w30 or 10w40 depending on where you are, and see what that does for the rattle - a few seconds is fine, anything longer than that - say more than a minute is cause for concern.

The valves don't require periodic adjustment - it has hydraulic lifters.

Use 5-30 oil, not 10-30 or higher, the heavier oil has been reported
to cause chain stretch in these engines, presumably from excessive
pressure on the chain tensioner
