Coil Spacer Help
« on: July 02, 2010, 11:11:33 AM »
Hello all,
Rank newbie here with a 98 tracker recently purchased.  I have picked up Jeff's coil spacer kit an installed the rear with no no problem.  Started on the front this morning and as I was compressing the spring on the passenger side it reached the point where it came free and the swing arm settled thus causing the drive shaft on the passenger side slipped out of the differential.  :(  Several issues though;  First is how to reinstall the drive shaft into the front differential?  Do I need to get new seals?
Second,  It it appears that even with the swing arm settling, I am not going to have the clearance to reinstall the coil after the spacer is in place on the post.  Any thoughts or ideas?  I have followed the instructions (I think!) but it seems I am missing something somewhere.

Many thanks and enjoy the 4th!!

As long as the circlip is still on the differential end of the cv axle, ( looks like a round metal split ring) you just push it back in the diff, making sure it engages the teeth on the inner differential, then give it a good tap with a mallet. Usually this is done with the cv disconnected from the locking hub. You don't need new seals. If the CV is still connected to the front hub, you may not get the swing arm to drop far enough to install the spacer. You may have to disconnect the front locking hub, remove the circlip holding the cv in the hub, and disconnect the strut to allow everything to drop far enough. There may be easier ways to do it, but that's how I did and do mine. Maybe someone else can chime in with an easier method? Also you may need some way to compress the coil far enough to reconnect everything once it's in place, like a come-along wrapped around the a arm and strut tower, or some guys have braced the upper strut tower from the engine compartment to something solid , like the roof of your garage, with a long board, then used a floor jack under the control arm to lift everything back into place.

Bentparts,
Thanks much for the quick reply.  I thought I had biffed the entire front drive upwhen the cv came out of the diff.
It looks like it will come together just fine.  Are there any other issues installing the spacers I need to be aware of doing the drivers side with its extension out of the front diff?  Or is it best to like the passenger side, to remove the cv from the hub to allow for enough clearance to intsall the spacer?
Thanks again in advance!

The drivers side should work the same way, just be careful when compressing the coils. Glad to help. ;)

Just wanted to say finished up the spacer installation and am very pleased with the results.  The 2" gained looks and feels like more!  Now just need to get the aligmnet done and I am good to go.  Jeff's kit was actually easy to install once I figured out how every thing works.
Thanks again Bentparts!
