My Sammi is a Whiner
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:57:06 PM »
How do you you tell if your tranny or your T-case is the whiner.  My rig runs great, but the whining is giving me not so good feeling.  I know i read a thread about this subject, not sure where?  Thanks

If it wines more in 3rd and 5th that means your bearings are going out in the transmission.  Try putting some fresh oil in first, if the wine is pretty loud you will probably want to look at a rebuild in the near future.

If it is the transfercase the wine should increase and decrease based on your over-all speed, not the gear that you are in.

I got a bad whinne right now and I'm pretty sure that it's the tranny....I will loosen the oil drain plug and then put a magnet on the plug. The metal particles in the oil will be attracted to the plug. Some models have magnets already. IF you find metal particles then you know it's not good.

I'm draining the oil in both tomoro and I'm hoping that it's the tranny....I've got 6 in the shed but only one t-case. I worked on getting a fullsize blazer out from a natural gas pipeline...and the blazer didn't run. I run mine hard and I'm going to pay for it.

A little hint if you are dropping the tranny....cut 1/4 from the rear tranny mount. IT will give you just the right amount of room to drop the tranny. otherwise you have to take out a engine mount bolt and move the engine forward a bit. Look at the clutch at the same time and the release bearing. I'm leaving my old clutch in because I've got to teach the GF how to drive a stick. when I drop in the DOHC it will get a good clutch.

When I first got my samurai the transmission was a real screamer but shifted and operated fine.  I drove it everywhere! Finally pulled the transmission apart to rebuild it and found all sorts of goodies laying in the bottom of the case, along with quite a few burned up bearings.

After seeing how totaled out the transmission was and thinking back on how much I drove and abused it....I think its just the way they like to run. ;D

Has anyone had there transmission spontaneously take a dump on them? Other than shift sheets and bolts?
It seems that they are pretty stout transmissions, I mean they do get rather loud and sloppy but they seem to keep on going.

I had rebuilt my tranny in my old blknight... I didn't have to cut anything out, or slide the engine forward... if you figure out the proper twist of the trans, it comes right out... after draining the oil that is, you won't make a mess... ne ways, I posted up in here last yr somewhere where to get a cheap rebuild kit.. bearings only, but it was like 69.00 plus shipping, I paid probably close to 85 bucks and it was the cheapest around.. came with every bearing for the inside of the trans, and the front and real main bearings. simple to rebuild, even emailed a guy here a how to video... might still have it in my email outbox, not sure... but it was a simple and fast task... my whining was all of my internal bearings were shot... didn't matter what gear, neutral or not.. lemme know if you can't find the link to the website in my old posts in a search.. and I will see what I can come up with

My wine starts in third, gets louder in fourth, and really howls in fifth.  Almost need ear plugs.  From the post it sounds like ther t case needs a rebuild.  It feels like its robbing me from power.  1 - 3 gears, the sami sounds pretty good.  IT is getting right at 20 mpg.

If the sound goes up steadily it sounds like a t-case.  You might as well put new bearings in the transmission while you are down there though, since it sounds like they aren't much more.

I am going to rebuild t-case and tranny after deer season.  I hope she'll make it.  Where does one get the overhaul kits.  The best bang for the buck. You know times are tough,

I got my transmission and Transfer case rebuild kits from Lowrange.  Everywhere seems to charge about the same for the kits.

I just finished rebuilding my transmission and transfer case with the bearing/servo/seal  kits advertised on E-Bay(Transparts was super fast in shipping).  Wasn't hard and you dont even need an hydraulic press.  Just a bearing puller and a medium size bearing splitter  was all I needed. The bearings are not pressed on that tight.  To re-install I used a piece of Derlin (plastic of sorts) as a driver to put the bearing back on.
The key issue on the transmission is to take the time and study the assy and follow the factory rebuild directions to the tee.  Dont let the "three little ball bearings" scare you.  The input shaft pilot bearing area was worn and I did the wider bearing fix that is posted in this site.  Saved me some $$ there.  Take your time.

On my transmission the front input bearing was the culprit and in the transfer case the same (input shaft bearing).   However in the transfer case I did find that the countershaft needle bearing and shaft were worn.  I used Petroworks for those parts.

All works great and it's quiet now.   Great evening project.
P.S.  I think I spent more time cleaning off the 150K miles of road dirt girme and grease than I did actually rebuilding.  Gets pretty mucky down there.  Now it's the only shiny spot under there.
