96 X-90 1.6 liter 4 valve FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL
« on: October 07, 2009, 01:48:34 PM »
Hello,

Regarding a 96 1.6 liter, 4 valve motor

Can the fuel injectors be pulled ... without taking off the intake manifold?  Or do you have to take the manifold off to get the room to pull the rail with the injectors?

It looks like there are (3) bolts holding the fuel rail in that are easy to get to ... and there looks like there is some room to pull back the fuel rail ... but before I get into it, I was wondering if anybody could say one way or the other.

Thanks a lot,
Tim

You can take the intake manifold apart by separating it into two pieces, you should be able to see the joint where they are connected right in the middle.  This way you don't have to unbolt the entire intake.  You will want to get a new gasket though, as they usually tear when you pull the two pieces apart.

Once you remove that you have plenty of room to pull the fuel rail and the injectors.

Thanks Drone, I really appreciate the reply.

OK, great.  I'll start calling part stores for the gasket and see what I come up with.  I was hoping I could just ease it back but it looked tight.  You make it sound like it is not too big a deal to get it out - thats a confidence builder.

Thanks

I just pulled mine apart a couple times this weekend.  Plan for an hour or so getting everything apart so you can lift it up and out of your way.  Expect to hit it a few times with a rubber mallet to get the top to pop off, just like an old valve cover.

Injectors are pretty expensive, Hawk has used ones for a good deal or Shucks has re-manufactured units.  If you have a problem with a cylinder not firing despite getting spark I suggest swapping the injector with another port and putting it back together and make sure the issue follows the injector and doesn't stay with the cylinder.

Ya, why do you want to pull the injectors ???
most injectors last the lifetime of the engine, what problem are you having?

I'm replacing my 3rd.  :D

For some reason one of the injectors failed to fire up after doing a JDM engine swap.  Strange as it klicks like it is supposed to when you apply 12v (Only do this on 16v injectors,  you will blow up an 8v one).  But the issue followed the injector and didn't stay on the cylinder so something is screwed up.

On a previous Tracker I had to replace 2 bad injectors, but it had been sitting for a while and didn't fire up after a head rebuild so who knows what happened to it before.

Hello,
Where did you hear that?  Most injectors last the lifetime of the engine???  Why would you say that?  You know, those platinum plugs with the four electrodes are guaranteed/warrenteed for 100,000 miles? Do you know why?  Because the electrode fires on one of the four nubs and when that nub wears down, it fires off the second, then the third then the fourth.  Thats the reason they are guaranteed for 100k miles.  Injectors, no.  The problem is they get gummed up, or the fuel filter doesnt filter fine enough and it lets incredibly small fine particles into the injector.  If you backflush the injector, you can actually see them with the naked eye.  They are super fine but they are there.  And, those particles reduce fuel flow through the injector.  So, I have a miss on one cylinder and its not electrical (igntion) so, its most likely a clogged injector.  Here is a link to some videos on injectors and you can see that some of them just arent spraying properly.  They spray like a squirt bottle where you can twist the nozzel and get fine or spray.  It should be a fine type cone spray.  You can see that they get clogged.

You might be right in that probably 95% of injectors dont fail because the injector coil blew open. If you want to check the voltage to the injector, you can get a NOID.  It plugs into the wire loom (remove the injector wire and pllug the noid in).  The noid flashes.  Or get a piece of wood and place it right on the injector and the other side on the side of your head right above your ear and you can hear the mechanical relay clicking in teh injector.  So, if the noid flashes and if the injector clicks, the injector is working BUT it may not be spraying a nice conical spray pattern because of some crud on teh injector nozzel.

Well lets see, I'm on my 2nd engine, and 295,000 miles, same throttle body.
Most injectors last a very long time, I would say with the clicking, and no fuel
there is a clog in the injectors filter screen, you might look at that

Ohh, and my truck with 298,000 (chevy) is still on the same engine.... and TBI injectors

When I swapped injectors for my turbo on my 16 valve engine I didn't have to seperate or remove the intake manifold. You can get them out easily by just removing the necessary compoments and wiggling the rail.

Bentparts; did you put a bigger injector in your engine? How are you adding fuel for the boost?
Thanks,
