I have a 95 tracker with a 3 speed auto,  as far as I know the gearing is 4.625?   I put some 235/75/15 tires on which measure about 28", roughly 2" inches taller than the stock tires.  After the lift: coil spacers and 3" body I plan on putting 31's or 32's. I'm guessing some 5.12's from a 5 speed wouldn't be enough? What is the next cheapest way to get the gearing back to normal. This tracker  won't be my daily driver but would see the pavement from time to time.

You should have 4.30 gears stock.  5.12s would be good I would think.  Beyond that there are 5.38 and 5.62 gears but they are not common so more expensive.

no he should have 4.62 i have the same tracker that he does and it had 4.62 gears in it. I ran 31 inch tires with the 5.12 gears and it was fine until i but the super swamper ltb's on it then it had a hard time turning them in the mud. you should be fine with the 5.12 gears.

Should have 4.30s then.  I have the same in my daily driver.  But I admit, I've never actually checked them to see.  But I do trust my source.  How is you check them, raise one tire, turn it 2 revolutions and count the turns of the driveshaft?

thats weird I have the 16 valve also and it had the 4.62 gears in it. I did look at a post on another site and it says it should have the 4.30 gears in it. sorry lilred I didnt mean to say you were wrong. but i did buy mine used but the guy i bought it from wasnt doing anything off road so i dont know why he would have changed them. or maybe I didnt check mine on this one. anyways. best thing to do it what he said lift one rear tire and mark the driveshaft and the pig and then rotate the tire and see how many times the driveshaft rotates compared to one full rotation to the tire.

I thought the 16V engine came with the 4 speed auto which is a Toyota corp built
tranny, I swapped to 235 75 15s and loved it, no gear mods, and it corrected the speedo
to read 100% right, mind you this was on an 89 8V with the 4.62s, these days I run 33 13.5 15
swamper LTBs and a set of highly sought after 5.83 diff gears, but if you swapped out the 5.12s
you shouls gain a little power on the road, swap out the trans speedo drive gear too, or at least
get it from the donor vehicle to correct your speedo readout if it's wrong

i think the 4 speed came in 96-97 or somewhere around there. mine has a 3 speed. it might have been an option too. I ran the 5.12 for a long time but once i put the ltbs on the rear and was in the mud it wouldnt turn them very well. so i had to do the reduction kit it was cheaper than the rare gears.

ok if you are running 4.62 gears with 31 inch tires then at 65 mph. in 3rd gear your rpms will be around 3500, if you run the 5.12 gears with same tires same speed rpms will be at 3800. now since it is mostly off road use then the 5.12 is your better choice. and still if you want to drive it on the road at 55 rpms will be around 3200. so still kinda high. but still better for off road use. as for going with 32 inch tires if there aggressive tires then i would not recommend it. i dont think the cv shafts will handle it for too long. I use to run 31's and that was the biggest i was going to go until i did what i did to mine. hope this helps ya.
