G16KV 16v 1.6 oil puff

So i was just wanted your guys insight on this issue.

I have a g16kv with some much needed work. 180k+ on the motor. The guy before me had it overfilled by 6-8 quarts of oil. It was so full it was spitting out the PCV valve. Took all the unnecessary oil out. I've been running it. It idles at 800rpms no shaking decent acceleration. But....

1) it buffs big blue when started
2) does a little puff when accelerating when i switch gears

I i know the head needs work. But what about the lower end? She's pretty tired. 180k.

I was gonna get a head rebuild for 225.00 down at cylinder heads specialist in portland, OR

but the full rebuild is 2k.....thats just not right. Im definitely on a budget.

Thanks for the comments

The little puff of smoke is probably your valves leaking. As far as a full rebuild if you have plenty of power you may get away with just a ring and bearing job to tighten it all up. It would depend on what the inside looks like. With a ring job you may squeeze 100k more before you will need a full rebuild.

Do they want that much with them diong all the work including pulling it? That seems a bit steep to me for you just taking the engine in and having them do the machine work...

Thanks robbin,

I've been throwing this idea around the group of wheelers i live with. They all keep telling me its my piston rings.....but im not really feeling like it is. I dont have that much compression loss.....besides some burnt valves.

I wouldnt mind doing a lower end rebuild to learn. But winter is heading in and i dont want to be outside in the snow working on a motor.....

the 2k is for a full rebuild if i pull it. they do the rest. Lower end top end rebuild. Bore if needed. and clean it all up and do a block check....
