Front axle trouble with XL-7 please help
« on: June 07, 2005, 08:25:22 AM »
I need a passenger side front axle for my ’02 XL-7 4WD. The dealer is quoting us almost $600. Yikes!
Is there another source? Used is okay as long as it works.

The story: I bought a Calmini lift kit for my XL-7 in November ’03, it was installed without the locking hubs on the front. Which was recommended in the instructions but not included in the kit, now it is. Great. The guys that did the install missed this.

Fast forward to the present: One of the Axle seals has failed and there’s 'some damage' to the Axle.
My mechanic is not sure if they can save the axle that is on it now.
So I’m coming here begging for help replacing this axle.
I've also ordered the locking hubs from Calmini so this doesn't happen again.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cameron in Vegas

I'm not sure if this is what you need, but here they cost for a GV around 300€. Is the $600 for parts and labour? I think is quite a lot.
I suggest you search a salvage yard for the parts. For example, if you find one which blew the engine, the axle parts should be perfect. And maybe look for an independent mechanic. Here, dealers are  expensive compared to independent mechanics.
About the specific damage, I can't say much. (especially without a foto ;)).
Oh, btw, welcome! ;D
And maybe this should go in the Xl-7 section ;).

Yea what he said ;D (1-888-samurai).

Is this a dealer telling you there is "some dammage" to the axle? If so Tell them you want to see the damage. They are probably upsaleing you to get a fist full of your money for doing nothing more that what they already have to do with the seal replacement. It sounds like a typical dealer service rip-off moove to me >:(

Call Hawk and Calmini and ask them what the odds ore of the axle having "some dammage". With out the seal and bearings being completely trashed I do not see how, and if they are claimimg it is the CV's that are worn, run it till it snaps, unlock you manual hub, drive it home and then worry about it (but it's not your CV's unless they are slipping and poping.

Mechanic:  "Hey, I need to make another Bassboat Payment!  Maybe this guy with the XL-7 will help me!"  ::)

You can fix this on the cheap if you are willing to get dirty.  Otherwise, I'd Call Hawk, get the part then see if you can get a mechanic locally to install the new halfshaft for you.

Hawk is GREAT!  I don't know about the newer stuff, but he seems to have anything for the older TracKick/Samurai/SJ-410...
