transmission breather lines
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:29:40 PM »
hello err hi. i have an 89' suzuki sidekick 2 door 4wheel drive 5 speed. my swapping out the tranny because it met its death. so  as im going along i realized that my Chilton manual said to unclip the breather hoses from the back of the cylinder head. well mine where all ready disconnected. but now that im putting the new tranny on in i'm kind of wondering what the hell these connect to.  after fully looking for an thing they could clip on to i have given up and kinda want to know what these go to. also are they breather lines or vacuum lines?  any help would be useful. thank you Ernie.

Would have to see a pic to know for sure, but there are breather lines on the transmission. The higher  you can run them (and the ones on your diffs) the better.

The Chilton manual makes for mighty fine campfire kindling - especially when it comes to the Sidekick!

I am not aware of any vacuum lines that go from the "back of the cylinder head" to the transmission.

I am not familiar with the 5-speed ( I have automatics) so I cannot say for certain that there is a breather hose on the manual transmission.  If there is, the other end would terminate with some sort of breather cap (ie. not connected to anything) in a higher location probably in the engine compartment attached to the firewall.  Perhaps that is what Chilton means when they describe "breather hoses from the back of the cylinder head"  Plural "breather hoses" may also include a breather hose for the transfer case.

I hope that this helps!
