Samurai transmission (What's this?)

I found this port open on mine and I have two other transmissions that have a open hole here too. What goes in this hole. If you can't tell by the pic, its the hole directly below the two electrical hookups. I don't know what those are for either but I keep them plugged in. Does it matter if the two plugs going into the transmission are reversed?

I took a brake bleeder cap (those rubber things that go over the bleed valve) and put some sealant around it and stuck it in there. I hope it's not a breather but it would have allowed water right in below the electrical connectors. I figure the breather on top by the shifter is the only breather and it looks like this mysterious hole  was plugged at one point anyways. Take a look at the picture and let me know what yours has in that spot or if you know what goes in that hole. Thanks.

a rubber plug, don't know what its for, but both my transmissions have a little rubber plug in them... should be ok with the bleeder plug!

Thanks.  Weird place for a hole like that. I wonder what it was originally put there for. There had to have been something at some point and then they engineered it out of the transmission.

The two plugs are the same EXCEPT for the connectors on the end of the pigtail....one is male, one is female.  If you install them reversed, then your reverse lights will come on when you shift into 5th and the EGR will be over-ridden when you shift into reverse.....so you need to make sure you have them installed correctly (the reverse one is the front one (closer to engine), BTW).

Even the 86 samurai trannys had the rubber plug....so I don't think it was something that was engineered out of the tranny.....but I have no idea what the purpose of having a hole there in the first place would be. ???

Well, my reverse light never comes on anyways. I don't know what you mean by the egr being over ridden. What does that mean. I better see if mine are in the right holes though.

The other switch it what they call a "5th gear switch"....when the tranny is shifted into 5th, it activates the switch and the switch cuts off the EGR function....supposedly giving a slight power increase and MPG increase.
As far as the reverse lights not working...could be burnt out bulbs, or bad switch, or bad ground, or bad wiring somewhere.

OK I did an exhaustive search. dose the Zuk "need" the 5th gear switch or can I bypass it? maybe I can run leads inside and hook it to a switch?

You don't have to have the switch.  It is supposed to make the samurai get a little better MPG when in 5th gear by controlling the EGR valve.  If you run it without the switch you may or may not lose any MPG benefit that may be gained by having the switch...but the engine will still run fine whether it is there or not.
