It doesn't sound likely but, could the egr switch influence the ignition.
I know I'm reaching for straws here but I don't want to fork out cash for an ignition module (Hall effect device) unless absolutely necessary.

Will a distributor from a 1.6 fit the 1.3 engine?
I have one of these from a sidekick engine that I plan on rebuilding and putting into one of my samurais.
I've got an 86 that I run, an 87 parts unit, a 91 that I'm working on and a 70 something lj 10 that I'll put a geo metro 3 cylinder into at some point.
It's the 91 with fuel injection that confuses me.

No... The EGR switch only bypasses the EGR function in 5th gear on the freeway when it isn't needed.
