Thinking about coming back...
« on: October 09, 2010, 03:56:36 PM »
I miss my Tracker even though I moved on to a bigger, more powerful, fully loaded 05 Grand Prix GTP.

I've been thinking about picking up a 4 door so I'll still have a little room.

Here are my questions...
V6 or 4cyl? I would like to have atleast close to 20mpg mixed.
Chevy or Suzuki? I think the Chevys are gonna be easier to find for less $5000
How many miles is too much? I got rid of my 99 with 107K miles but I also had it since 36K

Anything else? I haven't been around here in a couple years, anything mod wise for street use? I'm not into lift kits and big tires.

I have 5 1/2 years data on my V6 - 24.5 mpg (imperial) = 20.5 mpg US.. That's mostly urban/suburban driving, with only a few long runs.  I'd choose the V6, especially if you're used to a powerful vehicle.

Yeah I was thinking about looking for a V6 if I do get one. I'd like to get a 5spd again but that would mean the two vehicles i will have, my wife couldn't drive. (could be a good thing)

Just FYI, if you want a V6, you're likely to end up with an Auto transmission.  The Chevys were never built with the V6/manual combo., and there are only a VERY FEW Suzukis with V6/manual.  I know this because I searched extensively a couple of years ago when I bought mine.

I ended up deciding on a 4-cyl./manual because I wanted better MPG (I get about 24 average) and I hate autos bolted to motors with mediocre power.  I still ended up buying off Cars.com from a dealer over 600 miles away.  I never drove a V6 (purposely), so I couldn't tell you how the power compares, but I will say that the 4-cyl. is pretty slow unless you mod. it some.

Hope that helps.

IDK about being slow... When I had my 2dr 2.0/5spd that think would fly. I didn't have anything done to it except I took the air reserve in the fender out. I'm sure that the 4dr is slower but I don't know either, never drove one.

I had people ask me what size V6 it had in it because they had there V6 cars floored and couldnt keep up.

I honestly don't think there is a huge weight difference between the two.  My four door can almost keep up with the wifes XL-7 and I have a 2.0 with a stick.  Ithink you'd be happy.

I owned a 2nd gen Tracker with 2 liter and auto tranny.  It was plenty peppy for me.  I just decided to go with the manual tranny because I wanted to control the shifting.  I have nothing bad to say of the auto or manual.  I'm thinking once I get my other set of gears in the truck I have now and return more of the mechanical advantage it had stock, I will like it more, but I'm getting some added fueled milage right now as well too.

I've got a 4dr with a 2.0L and 5psd and just over 100xxx kms (60xxx miles).

Regularly pull my girlfriend's and my dirt bike, sometimes even up and over mountain passes. With the 5spd the trucklette can do it, but you need to rev the little four banger and expect to be passed. But at least i have no worries about boiling tranny fluid.

On average (before installing my lift and tires) i was getting about 500 kms (310 miles) per tank or approx 21mpg. This includes a mix of highway and city driving, and more often then not a heavier then average right foot.

I know you said you're not into bigger tires, but just FYI, with my 235/75R15 mud tires i now get about 19mpg. And i still have enough power to tow my dirt bikes.

My opinion, still the best small SUV out there. A inexpensive and readily available 4cyl with 4low, extremely versatile and easy to live with on a daily basis. How can you go wrong?

Found a couple of Tracker LT's that look good but I'm not ready to jump onto anything yet.
