87 Samurai Shackle lift??????
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:06:52 AM »
I want to lift my sam 2 inches. And I want to do it cheap. (On a very tight budget, not ghetto cheap). If I put on shackele's to I need 2 for every leaf spring, or like 4 total 1 on each spring? And how much adjusting steering, shifters, and drive shaft angles would I have to adjust? Thanks guys

I wouldn't go for more then 2" of extra length on my shackle, for 1" of extra lift.  Any more and your geometry starts to get a little weird.  With a shackle lift you need to have twice the length of shackle that you want to gain in lift.  This is due to only raising one side of the spring.

If you just looking for an extra bit of height you might look at an add-a-leaf kit.

So to get a 1" lift I would need 4 2" shackle's correct? Sorry if this is a total noob question. But My buddies are tellin me I would need 8 shackles 2 per leaf. But i saw some on ebay and there are only 4. So I was just wanting to clarify.

They are probably thinking of 8 bars, so 2 links per shackle.

Low Range Off-Road is a great place to browse items as they carry parts from just about everyone.  Surprisingly the only place I found selling the add-a-leaf was JC Whitney...

Or you could do like I did and just grab a second set of springs and steal a leaf.  :D

So is doing add-a-leaf from JCWhitney a better option than doing a Calmini shackle reverse kit. Someone on here said they would sell me the used calmini shackle kit for 125 with 2 rear calmini shocks

Why 2"? What size tire you trying to clear? You can easily trim 2" of fender, clear big big tires, do it on-the-cheap (cost of hand-tools you should have on-hand already), and keep your center of gravity crazy low. This is WAY important in short wheel based vehicles. Look at all the competition crawlers - suspension isn't much larger than stock.
