Alternator question.
« on: February 18, 2009, 04:49:27 PM »
I am doing the GM alternator upgrade to my kick. Mine runs the ribbed alt belt. Can I use the ribbed belt on the gm alt or do I have to switch all the pulleys to v belt?

GM SI-series Alternators are available with the flat ribbed belts and old-school v-belts.

The best way to get the right alternator is to go to a Pick-N-Pull salvage yard and "harvest" a unit that has the type of pulley that you need.  If the alternator turns out to be a "dud", you can use it as a core to buy a new/remanufactured one.

Watch out, though, you may need to "clock" whatever alternator that you get so that the electrical connectors are pointing in the right direction.  If you are unfamiliar with "clocking" an alternator, visit your local parts store and ask the "Old Guy" behind the counter.

Do a search for alternator at ack's FAQ (see sig) for more info.

ribbed or actually its called serpentine
accually they are different..

theers v belt, ribbed, and then serp.
v belt and ribbed both use seperate belts for each accessory. serp uses one belt, looped through several accessories and idler pullies to run. (serp is tensioned by a tensioner pully that puts the propper tension on the belt. vbelt and ribbed both use physical movement for the accessory to tension the belt.)
