3" Body Lift DIY
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:40:32 PM »
SSSWWEETT, EH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last Saturday a cuz and I made up a body Lift out of 3" square tubing 1/4" thick.
The Body mounts that the rubber mounts sit in are a bit indented, so end up being a smidge over 3".
Used 2 1/2" Square tubing as a stearing extension (again 1/4" thick).
Took the WHOLE DAY, no 3 hour kit thing (my cheapness sometimes works against me  ::))
I'll try and do a write up, but thought I should put some pics out.  I was to busy to take step by step photo's, I'm not that kinda organized.

Hopefully this sends you to my photobucket file for the pics I have so far.

Are you guys welding extensions of your trans and transfer case levers? How about the steering extension ? 3" for these vehicles seems a little unsafe/excessive. What size tires are you running ?

I've left the plastic consol out for now, seems fine.  I may weld an extension or find some way to 'nicely' go without the consol.
I used some 2.5" square tubing thats 1/4" thick.  Bolted it in same as the 'kit' extensions fit it.  The 2.5" works great with the 3" lift.
I hope to do some fender triming and fit 33" tires.  I don't have any body cladding, so triming should be easy.  With the 33" tires 3" should not be excessive.  I used a old DIY write up for a 3" lift for a 4 door sidekick.  So far seems as safe as any body lift could be.

Dam the link didn't work

Sorry, the height comparison against a Smart car isn't very helpfull.
The Body mounts are indented for the rubber mounts, so with the square tubing raise the body around 3 3/8".
I'll try and get a photo of the steering extension.

I think if you get an older-style Chevy S-10 shifter boot and use some self-tapping screws to bolt it right into your floor it would look and work pretty good. I've been running that on my Sidekick for over a year and it's been good. Just cover up the airbag module with something else...I used a piece of roofing rubber and stuck it to the bottom of the dash.
