cv boot replacement easy way
« on: December 04, 2008, 10:27:00 PM »
 :( :o :-[
Folks, I know that someone recently posted a method of removing the CV boots by dropping the front half shafts.  I have searched the site and cannot find it.  Apparently, I am delusional, or something.  And am not good at searches in cyber space.

PLEASE, would that member re-post or point to where I may find it (which thread).  My cv joints are good, but the boots are shot and the grease is gone.  The pro I aim to pay to do this would otherwise pull the wheel end, which sounds a lot more complicated and time consuming.  He is willing to do it from the inboard end of the half shafts, but needs to see the process in print before he will do it.  Need both sides done.

ALso, I need a recommendation for source for boots and grease and clamps.  Trying to avoid dealer locally.

Thanks for helping this old Marine in his latest senior moment.

Pat

So, after ALL the advice and help I got from the original post (grin), I will report what I did.

Dealer CV boot kits with boot, grease, and clamps were $200 per side.  Screw that!  Aftermarket search begins.

So, I now have new CV joints (good at 152K miles) and a new half axle on the pass, and a remanned on the drivers.  The remanned was $50 with $20 core charge, and the new was about $80.  Labor charge was less, as well.  Obviously, Suzuki wants us to buy aftermarket.

Felt so good about the result that I have R&R'd the gear oil in both pots and the tx case with synthetic (Mobil One is hard to get locally, specially the GL-4 for the tx case).  And had the cooling system backflushed and refilled.  Good to -55 degrees F, at near 50-50 mix.

Now if we can get more than 6 inches of snow in the mountains of Southern Oregon.  Need enuf to snowshoe.

Merry Christmas to all.

Pat

Sorry, I missed your post!

If you do a search for cv at Ack's FAQ (see signature, below for link) you will find a page for both disassemblling the front suspension and re-booting good cv shafts.

It looks like you did a good job on your own, though!
