1.6L 8V head on 1.3L sidekick motor
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:39:01 PM »
I was loaded up and ready to go to the monthly mudbogg Saturday when as we pulled out of the driveway, the sidekick dropped a cylinder :(! Turned around and to make a long story short, the no.3 exhaust valve has a hole in it.

A trip to pull-a-part, and I now have a 1.6L 8V head. I have read that these heads will fit the 1.3L. I was wondering if anyone had done this?

It looks like the valves are larger in the 1.6L head, and I am wondering if they will clear the piston. I will do some measuring tommorrow and check for myself, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks
David

Yes it will fit, you need to change over the cam pulley, I cant remember about the distributor housing, you might need to swap it too.

Make sure the oil hole in the head gasket is aligned with the hole in the head or it will be a short
lived head swap.

Wow! You have a fairly rare Kick. It's the first one I've heard of on here being built up. You have the most desirable of the factory gears. 5.62:1s. They only used them in 89 and on ly in the 1.3 version.

Oil hole..will write that down and double check, thanks wild!

Yeah, Idaho, I visually confirmed the 5.62:1's when I installed the Miller locker in the rear. 8)

The exhaust valve is about an 1/8" bigger on the 1.6 head as apposed to the 1.3. I am going to be careful when I install the head and make dang sure that the valves clear. I was also wondering if this head is gonna boost my compression.

I like the brush guard.  Looks good with the bumper cover removed.  :D

Thanks Drone!

Update on the head. Can't believe I did not notice the lack of a mechanical fuel pump on the new head. :-[ This head was never intended to have a fuel pump. Looks like I will be using an electric fuel pump.

Any suggestions or experiences to share??

Mount the fuel pump on the frame with a rubber holder. They can be very noisy when fitted to the bodywork. From what I've seen quoted on the web, the combustion chamber size on the 1.3 is the same as the 1.6 so the compression ratio will be the same. This was from CJ who used to post here, haven't heard from him for a while. You might want to use a die grinder and open up the inlet ports on the 1.3 manifold to suit the 1.6. Then use a 1.3 gasket opened out to suit. When I fitted a 1.6 8V to my SJ pickup using the 1.3 parts I found that the exhaust manifold was a good match. Here in the Uk we had a caburetted 1.6 so the fuel pump wasn't a problem for me.

The 1.6 is just basically a 1.3 with a .040" overbore and a longer stroke. Clearance isn't an issue.

When you mount the fuel pump if your running the ground to the frame make sure you clean off the area with a wire wheel or brush first.  A bad ground can cause the pump to overheat.

Also, make sure you get a decent pump.  And if you let it sit and idle for 15 minute or so, some of them will start to cavitate a bit due to not enough fuel running through it to keep it cool.  :)
