Electrical trouble
« on: November 08, 2008, 04:43:10 PM »
I've got an annoying electrical problem that I am having zero luck tracking down.  My battery keeps going dead literally overnight.  I've replaced the battery, taken the alternator in to have it checked out and tried connecting an ammeter between the battery and the positive lead to see if there was any sort of constant current draw.

I initially discovered that the dome light was pulling quite a bit of current even thought it wasn't burning.  Turning it off stopped 99% of the current draw but the battery still is only holding enough power to start the tracker about 3 times then it goes dead and will still go dead overnight if left to sit.

At this point, with everything in the vehicle off and the doors closed there is a 10 milliamp constant draw from the battery that I can't seem to locate by pulling fuses, but 10 ma should be enough to run a battery down overnight.

The alternator checks out, and the battery is brand new and will hold a charge if left disconnected.  At this point I'm at a loss as to where to look.  This problem came on fairly suddenly while the vehicle was sitting.  I haven't driven it but a time or two since January.  It was working fine when I parked it, and I would start it up occasionally just to let the battery charge.  One morning I came out to find that my radio had lost all of it's presets so I started checking it out each morning before I left for work.  Three mornings in a row the presets were wiped, then I started finding that the battery was entirely dead each morning and the tracker would have to be charged before it could be started again.

Has this happened to anybody else?  Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

Sounds like it might be a radio issue.  I would start pulling fuses at night starting with the radio and acc items.

Do you have a car-alarm on the device?

No car alarm.  I do have an after-market cruise, but I tried pulling the fuse on it over night and the battery still went dead.

I would start pulling wholesale, it has to be something.
