samurai high steer info needed
« on: September 15, 2008, 08:23:07 PM »
After numerous searches I can't seem to find all the info I need.  Does anyone know of a site with  complete information on doing a samurai high steer setup with the mercedes steering arms.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

There are now two links to articles on OTT steering systems that use Mercedes steering arms.  Both have a list of donor models.

Do a search for mercedes at Ack's FAQ.  The link is in my signature.

I hope that this helps!

Early 80's 200, 300, and 400 series Mercedes for the steering arms. 82-84 would be the best candidate. Make sure both arms are off the same car, they had 3 different arms that I have found over the years.
The hole at the thicker part of the arm is the hole that has enough meat to elongate towards the other hole. You can simply oversize the hole to 9/16 and it should be sufficient. You will have to shorten the tierod assembly by 5" and the draglink by 2 1/2". Whenever I've done this, I've tried to utilize the adjuster side and tube from a stock tierod when redoing the draglink. That way you have an adjustable draglink with a replaceable end at the pitman arm.

Thanks , this is exactly the kind of info I need.  You guys are great.  I found a 1983 mercedes 380 sel at the wreckers.  Will go back and get the arms now that I know they will work.  Should I get the drag link off the mercedes as well.  Or anything else?  And I imagine my anti-sway bar will have to come off to accomodate the steering modifications .  Thanks again for all the info.

I would pull the anti-sway bar off anyway.  :)

For some reason I thought you could just take the existing Samurai steering linkage and put it on the Mercedes high steering kit.  I thought there was a picture of this setup, but I wasn't able to find one on-line in a brief search.

If it's not going to cost any more I would snag the Mercedes kit as well, as it doesn't hurt in case you have to fab something up.

You could just put the existing Sami steering on with those arms... If you wanted to have the steering wheel turned about halfway to one side and the tires severely toed out. You have to cut both of them down in order to run it with those arms.
No, don't get anything else off the Mercedes. Use all the Suzuki stuff. The Krauts and slant eyes happened to use the same size hole with the same taper, even after we kicked both their asses they still are in cohoots together. Hehe!

Well yea, you will need to fix your toe in.  The taper is what I was worried about  :)

For resizing your tie rod a great way to do it is cut a chunk out, then get a piece of tubing that will slide over the existing tie rod.  You will want to make your cut dead center on the area you are sleeving, the more of the tie rod you have with tubing over it the more they will lend strength to each other.  The coal is to have the center of the larger tube be the weak point, not where it is welded onto your existing tie rod.
