16v issues at idle
« on: September 13, 2008, 12:35:41 PM »
Ok first its a 1995 sidekick with the 1.6 16v and 4 speed auto. it has roughly 85.5k and ran like a dream, then 1 day after work i started it up and it runs like its missing and shakes violently. once revved though the mis and sputtering goes away and it runs as it did. however once it returns to idle the engine does the same thing.  I've checked for vac. leaks twice now and nada. got a code 22 (low voltage TPS) out and sprayed contact cleaner on the tps and still nothing. Engine light isnt on and hasn't come on since this started.  the issues start right at startup when its cold and remains through all temps. only thing that makes it go away is revving or anything over 1500 rpm.  it will however run correctly 20% of the time at idle. any ideas or help is much appreciated..

Well, my first thought is that you probably have a bad Throttle Position Senser, not just dirty contacts.

Beyond that, check your plug wires, ESPECIALLY the coil wire. I once had a car that had the exact same symptoms you speak of. Back then there were no scan tools available to me. I checked the plug wires and they seemed fine, so I assumed the fuel injector. After replacing it I has the same issue.

Upon further investigation I found that the COIL wire was shot. Literally an inch of it was powder! Only when the engine was revved was enough voltage generated to jump the powder and make the engine run closer to normal.

Don't know if that's the issue in your case, but it's worth checking.

i would agree with this also check the cap to, once in a while they can get small cracks

I had a similar problem recently on the X-90. Although mine would miss just below 3000 RPM. It would idle fine and run fine above 3k, but just before 3k it would start missing until I revved past 3k. First thing I tried was new plugs and wires. The wires looked pretty good when I pulled them out, but the plugs had been so used that the gap was over twice the size it was supposed to be. The fresh plugs and wires must have been the problem though because after I changed them, it ran fine again...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...
