Sidekick j18 engine swap from Esteem j18
« on: March 31, 2009, 12:58:04 PM »
I have a 97, sidekick sport, engine is very tired 155,000 miles, considered rebuild but recycled engines run about $1,000.00.

I looked at a 2001 engine from a Suzuki Esteem with 35,000 miles will this fit into my 97 Sidekick sport  they are both J18 engines except hor. application in the Esteem?

Thanks for the help

Kirk ???

I believe it is the same engine (block and head wise).  I do know some of the engine "components" are different than the sidekick sports.....like the coil packs, for example, the plugs/connectors for them are different.  But you'll just be using the block and head anyway, so that won't matter.
You will probably have to use the sport engine mounts.  I know that the samurai 1.3 engine mounts will fit the 1.3 geo metro blocks......and I am guessing the sport and esteem is the same way.  Same deal with the oil pan.
You will likely have to use the sports intake and exhaust manifolds too.
Tracker and Sidekick parts for sale.....PM me with your wants/needs.

At the very least you will probably have to swap your oil pan, oil pump, intake and exhaust.  The Esteme is setup for FWD vs the longitude mount on the Tracker.  Possibly the Distributor as well.  I'm basing this off the 2.0L swap if you pull your engine out of a car, so I could be wrong.  :)
